But, since Sheila says that this is having no nuisance impact on her as list manager, I'd like to get this demime thing settled before I *do* have an impact on some other list manager. Their will, I hope, only be two of these, then I'll quit. Thanks in advance for your understanding and tolerance. I wouldn't worry about it... unless it happens all the time... and it didn't happen w/ that last post of yours! :) << Yeah, that's strange. Maybe it only happens when I send a new mail, instead of replying to an old mail? As for MSFT, personally, I can't speak to their "predatory nature" - though there are so many stories, that some of them must be true. :) But I can say, from my own experience, that I think that MSFT takes a good approach to a *lot* of ideas. It's just a shame that their execution is usually way short on any given idea's potential. Though they usually make it better. Eventually. Then there's Office XP, which has been very frustrating. For every nice new feature or improvement they've made from Office 2000 (the new built in voice recognition is fantastic), there is some feature that used to work very nicely and either no longer works at all, or has had some really obnoxious twist incorporated. I've also had to phone support twice about Office XP, and the support people were very good. So, yeah, Microsoft is easy to bash, even by those of us who *like* their products - but at least they're heading in the right direction. Mostly. Thanks. Outlook 2002 has slightly different options, though. The e-mail Properties window allows you to select among sending as plain text, sending as rich text, or letting outlook decide. Unfortunately, the default (at least when sending "to addressees that are not in your address book" according to Microsoft, but it looks to me like it's the default in all cases) is to let outlook decide, even if you have plain text selected as your default format on the overall options/mail format window. There doesn't seem to be a way to change this default, so, even if you've selected the overall option to send plain text, you still have to select the plain text option for each e-mail address you send to, or else you may randomly generate a rich text or html formatted e-mail upon occasion. Now, isn't that real bright of Microsoft? Bozos. "We're All Bozos On This Bus" - Firesign Theater. "But some are more bozo than others" - Ken Stiffler, paraphrasing George Orwell. So, as I suspected, Outlook 2002 is doing something weird. And obnoxious. So, anyone who sends mail to a listserv in plain text format, but occasionally has their mail show up with garbage attached, do the following: 1. In the Outlook Contact window for this listserv, right click on the e-mail address 2. Select "Properties" 3. Select "Plain Text" as the "Internet Format". If you're about to send an e-mail, and you have the e-mail window open instead of the Outlook Contact window, right click on the e-mail address and select Properties. The Contact window will appear and you can proceed with steps 1-3 above. If the address book appears instead of the contact window, right click on the e-mail address you want to use and proceed with 2-3 above. If the address you are sending to is not in your Outlook Contacts, when you click on Properties on the e-mail address, you may get a window that does not have the "Internet Format" box. In that case, you are probably going to have to add the e-mail address as a Contact before you can change the setting to Plain Text. Oh, and, if you're using Outlook via Exchange (in a business over an network), then I have no idea if everything I've described above will be the same for you, or totally different. Isn't this fun? The distinction between the Outlook Contact entry and the "Address Book" entry, and especially with the "Nicknames" file in the mix, is a mess. Until I can find a document somewhere that describes in detail what is happening behind the scenes, I am never going to fully understand Outlook e-mail addresses.
