Hey U, JangleNookers! I just woke up refreshed from a wonderful whirlwind weekend. Friday afternoon Larry met me after work & we blasted up 2 the Towne Crier in Pawling, NY. Phil, the manager was a pain in the ass (as usual) but he runs a great club W/ good food & fantastic deserts. Naturally I was full of clams when we got there. Ruth Unger & a banjoist opened the show W/ an old timey feel playing mostly originals & a few Mammals tunes. I haven't seen the Mammals yet but I'm a big fan of Ruth's mom & dad Lynn Hardy & Jay Unger. The set was just long enough (30 min) 2 arouse my curiosity. 2 discribe Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams W/ mere words is quite a challenge. This 4 piece ensemble has developed a cult following in the West Chester county/ W. CT. area X playing a hybrid folk style that resides on the rocks somewhere 2 the left of folk... Rockfolk, that's what I would call it. Their musical style incorporates many of the classic sounds of rock & roll (Beatles/ Dylan/ the Band/ VanMorrison/ NeilDiamond/ Pink Floyd/ CrashTestDummies) while retaining an acoustic folk based sound W/ tight complex vocal arrangements. The Circus opened W/ their classic Silent Revolution & proceeded 2 deliver an inspired per4mance thru out the evening. Durring the encore they played Suddenly It's Christmas, a new tune that's been getting some airplay in the NYC area this season. It was a fine gift 2 a sold out room & I'm glad I got there early. It was nice 2 C Journey Bear, Melissa & Kate show up in just the nick of time. All in all, it was a great show that Xceeded all of my Xpectations, this being only the 2nd time I've seen them. Rick Rock from the Hammond House, a Circus veteren said it was 1 of the best Circus shows he had ever seen. The Circus consists of Joziah (acoustic guitar/ vocals), Sharkey (lead & slide guitar, bass, mandolin/ vocals), Tink (acordian/ cello/ vocals), & Tony (drums/ percussions)... & yes, they can space... The stage banter is very amusing & appears unrehearsed. Joziah is a trip... very deep & thought provoking... & it's history now! Coincidentally, the Circus just released a new 2 CD set titled Live @ the Towne Crier, following their epic 1999 release A Good Thief Tops His Hat. Thanks 2 Sarah & Joe 4 hooking us up W/ floorspace after the show... 'A cup of cold coffee, gonna get up in the morning & go...' We high tailed it across the Tappan Zee & down 2 Godrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA, 1 of the coolest folk clubs in the country (well it used 2 B anyway). We grabbed a front row parking place where I took a nice little nap waiting 4 the Kennedys 2 show up W/ the mobile Highway 61 Revisited Vintage Clothing Boutique on wheels. We almost got lynched X the Godreys staff because P&M were running a little late... I tell U these folks R getting more militant each time I go there. The highlight of the show 4 me was the debut of a new Kennedys song about Wynnona Ryder. I'm not sure if it has a title yet. I also got 2 catch a peek @ the artwork 4 the next CD Get It Right, which was done X Kelly & Rocky. Maura had her old Yamaha guitar up 4 sale. @ $50 it got snatched up right away. If not 4 Christmas the Yamaha would have been mine (don't get me started). It's safe 2 say the guitar found a good home & I concider myself lucky 2 have gotten a chance 2 play it 4 a few minutes. Finally Get It Right/ EZPeople was good... While My Guitar Gently Weeps hit me right where it counts. The 1st song River Of Falling Stars was a request from Natalie, who was in the front row W/ Gracie & her folks Mike & Kate (nook person). Gracic requested Run Red Lights in the 2nd set & it included an Xtended slide jam where Pete played slide W/ his capo, a wine bottle, guitar shaped Christmas lights, & the neck of Maura's spare guitar. He was literally playing 1 guitar W/ the other. It was a typically wonderful Kennedys holiday Xtravaganza! Thanks Kennedys... Y4Y! Y4Ks!!! Greta came up from MD, Ken came from VA, Larry from Atlantic City, Jeff from Lebanon or there abouts, & yes, we all missed Bern who did not come up from Philly... U missed a good party @ the Bridgeworks across the street. The bartender was out of control but Maura finally got the upper hand... I'd like 2 wish everybody a quick Christmas & a sloppy new year.
