This is long, so to sum up for people who want to skim (this is 100% raw Kennedys' content, I promise). For those who are already reaching for the delete key, I hope everyone has the best of holidays and may the New Year bring more of what kicked butt about this year (how many more days to FRFF02?), and less of what you could have done without! Peace and blessings, Sheila (1) Downtown Messiah live (2) Downtown Messiah rebroadcast on radio (and TBA broadcast on NJ television) (3) New Year's Eve (4) WFMA's 17th Annual Benefit Weekend *1* First off, Pete and Maura are currently in NYC, where they've been rehearsing for the Downtown Messiah, one of their yearly traditions: Friday & Saturday, Dec 14 - 15 - "THE DOWNTOWN MESSIAH" - A Modern Interpretation of Handel's Masterpiece With Choir, Chamber Orchestra, and Guest Soloists at the Bottom Line, 15 West 4th St. at Mercer, New York, NY. Soloists include: The Kennedys', David Johansen, Terre Roach, Jane Siberry, Tony Trishka, Richard Barone and many, many more. This has become a tradition for The Kennedys, as well as for hundreds of New Yorkers, and this year the show is expanded to two nights! (box office at (212) 228-6300 or the NEW schedule information number (212) 502-3471 or come down to the box office, which is open 7 days a week from 10 am to 11 PM. Purchasing tickets by mail order: send a certified check or money order plus 50 cents for handling to The Bottom Line, 15 West 4th Street, N.Y., N.Y. 10012. The Downtown Messiah) $25 www.bottomlinecabaret.com *2* WFUV (90.7 FM) will be broadcasting this show in its entirety twice: 12-3 PM on Dec 21st and 7-9 PM on Dec 24th For those of us out of WFUV's broadcasting range, we can tune in on line at http://www.wfuv.org. In addition, the Metro Channel, which is a New Jersey TV channel is video taping all four shows and editing them together, and will air the full show, but we're not sure when...once we find out, I'll let everyone know (do we have any NJ Janglers willing to videotape this?). *3* Looking for something to do New Year's Eve? Monday, Dec 31 - Kennedys' annual New Year's Eve celebration at the Starland Cafe, w/ Jon Carroll joining in all night! The Starland Cafe, owned by Starland Vocal Band member Bill Danoff (writer of "Country Roads" and "Afternoon Delight"), serves up delectable food and has a full bar and a very talented wait staff. 5125 MacArthur Blvd., NW, Washington, DC 202-244-9396 I was at last year's shindig, which ended up being one of the most surreal epics of automotive disaster, but prior to that point (at around two in the morning), I had the most fun I've ever had in my life. The food was awesome (though it's not on the set menu on NYE, ask for the "Pot o' Chocolate," Maura's personal recommendation, which I thoroughly second), and the music, of course, cannot be beat. Midnight is heralded in with a conga line that just snakes around the entire room. I came from Boston for this last year, and it was worth every mile; it was even well worth the trauma that was the first day of my new year. I cannot recommend this gig highly enough. I'd be there myself, but I'm sticking closer to home. The car now has 140,000 miles on it, and doesn't want to go backwards anymore. I'd be pushing my luck...... *4* Okay, I've been trying to figure out a way to sum up this next goodie, but I think I'm not even going to try. Here's what I was sent (I won't be saying anything original after this, so you can go ahead and hit the "delete" key if you're bored by now). WORLD FOLK MUSIC ASSOCIATION 17th Annual Benefit Weekend Each January, for the last 16 years, the World Folk Music Association has sponsored an exciting folk music extravaganza, bringing together a unique mixture of both well-known and lesser known folk performers. It has always been a wonderful opportunity to see and hear your favorite folk performers as well as become aquainted with new ones. In 1997 the concert was expanded from a single evening in a large concert hall to a full weekend of folk music at one of the best listening rooms in the country: The Birchmere will again be the site for the 17th Annual WFMA Benefit Weekend, on January 18-19, 2002. The entire Benefit Weekend (cosponsored by WFMA and World Hunger Year) will be a tribute to Harry Chapin. Among the folk stars scheduled to perform are Harry's brothers, Tom Chapin and Steve Chapin, and his daughter, Jen Chapin. Also appearing will be David Buskin, Modern Man, Schooner Fare, the Kennedys, Weavermania, Joe Glazer, Berkley Hart, Bryan Bowers, Paperboys, Side by Side, Joe D'Urso, Kitty Donohue and others to be announced at a later date. There will again be two concerts this year. The tribute to Harry Chapin is scheduled for both the Friday, January 18th concert and the Saturday, January 19th concert with the members of Harry's family, Tom, Steve and Jen, performing on both evenings. Both reserved and general seating tickets are available. Tickets can now be ordered on-line, by phone or by mail. There are discounts for ordering early, so use your web browser to print our ticket order form, go to our secure web site, or call 703-237-9500 or 888-843-0933 to order your tickets now. Email ticket order confirmations were sent on 12/3/2001. Tickets will be mailed no later than 1//4/2002. Reserved seating tickets for the Saturday night show include admission to a reception with the performers following the show. The reception will be held at the WFMA Headquarters Hotel, the Holiday Inn National Airport/Crystal City. If you are coming in from out of town or planning to attend the reception, you may want to consider staying at the Headquarters hotel. Volunteers are needed for the Benefit Weekend. Find out more about this exciting opportunity. As more information becomes available about the weekend, it will be posted here. http://wfma.net/WWWFOLK.htm Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V3 #201 **********************************
