The Cady/Kennedy connection is a dynamite dynamic. The Good Folk Coffeehouse rules!! Brandy is a wonderful cook and the homemade desserts are out of this world (I think I gained 5 lbs). They have live music every saturday night at 8 and Cadence recommended, and I so second this, that you stop by sight unseen "because brandy always gets great performers." Never thought I would wish I lived in Connecticut. Openers were a taciturn but very literate poet (he used the words "courting" and "kiss-off" in the same sentence.), followed by a high-spirited, banjo-armed sea-shanty singing bloke with the best beard I've seen in months. He was great. Cady takes the stage: Hoping You'll Believe Harvard Square - YAY! Pete + Maura join Cady on stage with pilfered toys from the playroom: a fireman's hat and a Brunhilda helmet, both of which lost no time falling off heads: Sunday Afternoon Love - new song, I love the line, "It's like hey, what the heck!" You Might Be The Ocean? Another new tune, I think, very haunting. EVOLVE, with the audience rounds, of course, a powerful song for times like these. Encore: Cady kept saying that she wanted to hurry up and let the kennedys on stage "cause she was "so excited to hear them play," but the audience wouldn't let her get away. Farm Fresh Five song, dedicated to Conehead, about Stu Leonard's shopping bags? Northern Lights, another new song, I think. Getting very excited for the CD release. By the way, funds are low, so please pre-order your Cadence Carroll CD for a $5 discount on the list price. It's definitely a worthy cause. I can't find a website for this. Sheila? And I can't believe I always thought Cady was primarily a djembe player. How wrong I was. She rules. Oh, I said that already. The Kennedys take the stage: YAY 4 YAY! Life Is Large Common Bond P+M tell us that they've just driven here from L.A., and they renewed their vows in the Elvis church in Las Vegas on their 7th anniversary Awww... River Of Falling Stars Can't Kill Hope With A Gun, which they pointed out they have been getting a lot of requests for, since 9/11 As I Went Out One Evening Pete plugs the new Dylan album, Love + Theft, says it's amazing he's still writing great stuff. Discussion of "folk process" also known as plagiarism, which they practiced on Hank Williams Sr. for the tires and tubes line. Which Hank song was that? Run Red Lights Come In My Kitchen Fortuneteller Road, requested by Cady Morning Comes to Me, bells and loaves and letters, which poem is this from again? Maura recited it before the song and the sage adults about me nodded their heads in recognition, but I missed it. bad bern. Eau de Joie Highway 10, which I requested as "Highway 11" medlied with Rappahannock, another request "A lot of our favorite people have the last name Nields. Do you guys know the Nields? We'd like to dedicate this song to them." Easy People, which sounds great! Maura changes some of the words, but it really works. It's been really really fun hearing kennedys/nields come together. Hoping for more. EZ People medley into Get It Right, great new song, medley into What's Gong On, Pete is so cute when he does the "ba-ba-ba" part. :-) Pearl's Eye View, introed by a comment that "we're a spinoff of Nanci Griffith's band like Rhoda was a spinoff of Mary Tyler Moore", followed by Pete's comment that as part of their continuing interest in Dickey's life, they went to Brooklyn Heights where her apt was and discovered that she had a killer view of Lower Manhattan. That visit was on September 10th. Wow. Pick You Up, dedicated to the FDNY, "above + beyond" Orange Blossom Special, woo-hoo! Rain On Me, the Buddy Holly song, hope I've got the title right. medley into Not Fade Away enter Cadence, actually she jumped on stage a few times, I lost track. Sirens solo, w/out Sirens. Johnny B. Goode, changed to Maura B. Goode as M. rocked out. Life Is Large reprise encore, kennedys + cady come to the stage wearing KISS masks, Pete's has a big red tongue sticking out of it, and sing Monster Mash. V. funny. She Loves You (yeah yeah yeah) Closing act, a nice gentleman with 3 of his 4 children, I believe he was Brandy's son, but I'm not sure. They start singing Beatles songs, the 2 boys are playing a tambourine and a rattle and the daughter's singing harmony. They rock! Brandy told us later that the tambourine player, though he's only 5, can play some very complicated tambourine rhythms: We Can Work It Out (Maura is so impressed she runs out and gets her digital video camera) OOps! I'm drawing a blank on what else they played! They were going to play Come Together when we left for the train. What a talented family! Puts the von Trapps to shame. So at 2:15 AM I get into the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and discover it's really 1:15! Yay for gaining an hour! And after recharging my Metro Card, I turn around and there's Lyndhaven, a long-time Nooker, who "demands an explanation." So we take the ferry "home" and talk about Sylvia Plath, whose birthday it was and who we both have a sort of obsession with, both drink big beers, and then it turns out we take the same bus to our respective abodes. So I got to spend my extra hour in good company. What a great night. Yay for good friends and great music! Janglers! We almost didn't have a quorum! Some people would argue that Cone doesn't count toward the number. We were cutting it close. C U next time. Best wishes and safe travels to all and sundry. bernadette, "up to my knees in fallen leaves, talking to you so bold,," Cadence - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Only $9.95 per month! http://my.netzero.net/s/signup?r=platinum&refcd=PT97 Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 17:35:59 -0500 From: "Mike Hooker" Subject: [JP] NY gig? hi, i thought i heard on the radio that the kennedys were doing a show in NYC in mid nov.. not the one at the bottom line, but another club. there is nothing on the web site, but i'm pretty certain i heard right. anyone know for sure? thanks take at look at my music trading list http://pages.zdnet.com/mikehooker/hookstradingpage have fun, Mike Hooker Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V3 #185 **********************************
