Hi Mike - Welcome aboard! Sheila knows the official Kennedy policy on taping - what say, Sheila? Can we accommodate another "documentarian"? As for getting from the Bridgeport Ferry terminal to the Acoustic Cafe: I don't recommend walking as it would be a long, urban, post-industrial trek of about 3 miles as the crow flies. It's not a direct passage, either, crossing several major routes. You'll go through some pretty scary neighborhoods on the way and you'll get lost without a good street map. Bridgeport's neighborhoods got cut up by I-95, Conrail and Route 8 construction, so the street grids often don't make sense. If you do decide to hoof it, head North from the terminal to Fairfield Ave. Follow Fairfield Ave to the West - Acoustic Cafe is on the right near the intersection with Wilson Street. Better to arrange a ride from the Ferry with someone on this list or take a cab. I'd offer, but I'm not sure if I'm going to this show yet. Anyone else coming out from the Island or passing near the Route 8/25 I-95 interchange? ~jim Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2001 11:59:08 EDT From: Fantine729@aol.com Subject: Re: [JP] new lister and taping In a message dated 9/22/2001 10:26:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time, mhooker@optonline.net writes: << i'm also a taping and trading maniac, most of what i listen to is live music. does anyone know the taping policy of the kennedy's? i'm not talking mic stands and booms, but unobtrusive taping. of course its for fan use only, not sale. >> AND << Sheila knows the official Kennedy policy on taping - what say, Sheila? Can we accommodate another "documentarian"? >> Welcome aboard Mike, and I am fairly certain that The Kennedys are cool with fans taping. I'd dare say there probably aren't many of us who don't have at least ONE live Kennedys boot running around their environs, and I know too that all of the ones I have have been passed along to me by other Kennedys fans. Also, it was partly due to the efforts of Cone that we have the live CD! Take some time before the next show to introduce yourself, and then you can ask them yourself. These guys are so utterly approachable. I saw Pete and Maura at the Boston Folk Fest yesterday. I missed one song of their round-robin workshop (with Barbara Phaneuf/Seth Connelly and Atwater-Donnelly because we all sort of had the times mixed up (I was at the main stage laughing my butt off at Vance Gilbert....man, did I need that). I came in to the strains of The Coo Coo and then, they played something I can't remember -- a spiritual-type piece -- in the style of a group whose name is escaping me, but Pete said we should go out and buy their albums. They both looked very patriotic, Maura in a red top with white stars, red pants with gold flares (looked like sparklers) up and down the sides of the legs, and a blue scarf with white polka dots. She also had an American flag stuck at the top of her fret-board. Pete was wearing white top with star cutouts, and had a flag taped to his guitar strap. Their solo set on one of the inside stages was the best, though the sound was the worst I've ever heard. I could not find a pen, so I couldn't write down the set list, but they started off with Life is Large, and also played, in no particular order, Chimes of Freedom, Rappahannock, Orange Blossom Special, Can't Kill Hope with a Gun, and Pearl's Eye View, before the sound became so bad that they just asked everyone to push on down toward the front (we were in a large lecture hall on the UMASS-Boston campus) and they unplugged, singing and playing totally acoustically. This was so cool, and the songs included River of Fallen Stars, Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away, Run Red Lights, and I'm blanking. For the first encore, Maura tried to sing Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World, but couldn't without crying, so she asked the audience to help, which was such an uplifting thing, because she could get through it with our help. There was another encore after that, but again, I can't remember what it was. I think they got a few standing ovations! I think I also forgot to mention last week that Maura has a new guitar, a Gretsch, smaller than, but similar to, Pete's. The new Gretsch has a great sound, and the effect of matching guitars is very adorable. Did anyone catch the interview yesterday? They don't have archives up for it yet at WAMU.org. I guess the last concert I saw really pushed me to join. Their set was wonderful and they ended with this land is your land. I have seen them a few times over the summer and each time has gotten better. I love music and it's a big part of my life. I'm in a school where we study music acing and dancing. so I guess that't all I have to say Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2001 18:46:00 -0400 From: "Rebecca Derry" Subject: Re: [JP] hi >hi my name is Megan, I'm new to the list too. Hey Megan, welcome to the list ;) Yay Baltimore Jangle-Poets! Yeah, that show (Cellar Stage, 9/15) was amazing. After a fantastic set including a lot of the staples (Life is Large, River of Fallen Stars, I'd Run Red Lights..., Pearl's Eye View, etc) and a whole lot of jamming (including a successful cover-up when Maura's string broke on her new guitar), The Kennedys finished with "We Shall Overcome" and "This Land Is Your Land", which just made everything so right. It's amazing how much music can lift the soul in times of trouble. The only thing that I personally found missing at that show was "You Can't Kill Hope With a Gun". But twas a wonderful and rather emotional show nonetheless. Peace, ~Rebecca Who realizes now that she never gave an introduction when she joined, but ah well, here I am "As we revolve, we evolve To a place of love" ~Cadence Carroll _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V3 #160 **********************************
