Washington is bordering on jingoism, I fear. Today I noticed a new billboard on New York Avenue eastbound from Clear Channel -- a big American flag as a background to the words "United we stand." So is censorship of music part of being patriotic these days? That's not my reading of the Constitution. We can't let political correctness or fear of terrorism rule our lives and erode our freedom. We have to show the world that America is made of sterner stuff. Anything less would be a victory for those who would defeat us. Hey J-Ps, The First Amendment is dear to me. It is my livelihood as a journalist and my soul as a songwriter. What Clear Channel has done shows to what extent idiocy and lunacy can go when it comes to political correctness and censorship. It also clearly demonstrates the danger of large corporate media ownership. Check out the story on the New York Times site and see for yourself. http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/19/arts/music/19POPL.html No one I can think of stood more for peace and anti-violence than John Lennon, and yet he, too, was a victim of senseless violence. Now, his work is being victimized again (Imagine is on the Do Not Play list). How can sane people let this happen? Media censorship, regardless of its motivation, is truly un-American. - -- Jay "Injustice is relatively easy to bear; what stings is justice." - --H.L. This show will air on WAMU (88.5 FM in the D.C. area or live online at http:/www.wamu.org) Saturday at 11 a.m., and will be housed in the online archives after that. Maura says they had a really good interview and played "Can't Kill Hope With A Gun." I look forward to hearing it when I get back from the Boston Folk Festival, as I'm very interested in what these guys have to say. With mixed and conflicted emotions, I actually went to New Haven last Friday to see Pete and Maura as part of the Eli Whitney Folk Festival Song Circle. It turned out to have been just the right thing to do, and, fortunately, the church was filled with people who felt just as I did. I was surprised at the amount of solace I took from the show, and the positive energy was uplifting. The Kennedys modified "Life is Large" a bit.....instead of the part in the third verse about "How do you want to be remembered? A raging fire or a dying ember?" they sang "Don't give up hope this dark September. We'll make it through if we just remember....Life is Large." Perfect. They also did an amazing "Chimes of Freedom," which totally made the night. I'm trying to remember the rest of the set list. Common Bond. Bend in the River. Pete played Jesu. I'm blanking on the rest. For the encore, they, along with Lui Collins and Jess Klein, sang "This Land is Your Land." I hope everyone is okay and healing as well as can be expected. What music (listening or playing) is getting everyone through? I've been learning how to play "Can't Kill Hope With A Gun" myself.
