Brendan's Email Woes ******************************************************* 1. We're In Print A Lot These Days...Like The NY Times! ******************************************************* On Sunday, August 19th, there was a feature story on us in the Westchester section of the New York Times. If you can't pick up a copy and see us in all of our hot-off-the-big-apple-press glory, you can see the story at: http://www.groovelily.com/index2.html?press While we're normally very reserved individuals, we must admit that we were compelled, no, actually forced, by our circumstances to shout out James Brown songs and dance the "butter churn" upon finding out that we were going to be written up in the BIGGEST DAILY PAPER IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE. Ahem. Also deserving of special mention are 3 excellent regional newspaper articles: we are especially proud and pleased about the following recent features on GrooveLily, chosen from quite a few this summer. 1 - JULY 27, 2001 JOURNAL NEWSPAPERS "The Electric Violinist's New Groove" by Brian Truitt "Valerie Vigoda is a hero for classical musicians, like if Madonna took up the contrabassoon or Metallica hired an electric tuba player to replace Jason Newsted." 2 - AUGUST 16, 2001 THE PRINCETON PACKET/TIME OFF "Weekend Jamboree" by Dan Shearer (on the Philadelphia Folk Festival) "They're young and vibrant, a band that could ultimately be rock 'n' roll superstars because they have the look for it and they know how to handle themselves with savvy." -- Gene Shay, WXPN 3 - JULY 5, 2001 THE ADDISON EAGLE "Festival On The Green: NY Band GrooveLily Bears Watching" "They are witty and profound...teetering on the brink of inevitable celebrity." Full Stories at http://www.groovelily.com/index2.html?press ********************************* 2. A Two-Pronged Publicity Attack ********************************* We are thrilled to itty bitty pieces about our marvelous publicist, Karen Greco. She is doing an amazing job, and from now on she'll be concentrating exclusively on New York and larger national publicity opportunities for GrooveLily. Go Karen!! Meanwhile, the fabulous T. Dean Adams is the newest addition to our team. She will be concentrating on specific regional/tour-related publicity, and working closely with our manager Sandy Ross on many aspects of GrooveLily World Domination. Her first project is (drum roll, please): **************************************************** 3. Petal Pushers (Join The Quality Music Revolution) **************************************************** The Quality Music Revolution is the very best kind of revolution: joyful, painless and nonviolent. Want to be a part of it? Do you have what it takes? We're looking for some exceptional people to join us as we sow the seeds of GrooveLily throughout the land. These exceptional people are called Petal Pushers! Here's how it works: 1) You contact us at petalpushers@groovelily.com, with an email telling us in what cities you can spread the word. 2) When we confirm that we've got a show in your area, you'll get a special flyer to put up around the cool parts of town in conspicuous places. 3) At the show, you coordinate with other Petal Pushers at the merchandise stand, since you are uniquely qualified to tell new listeners about the Lily. 3) In the future, we may ask you to call local radio stations, check local record stores for GrooveLily items and engage in other revolutionary activities. In return, you will receive: 1) Two (2) free admissions and two (2) backstage passes to each GrooveLily show you promote. 2) Special rewards for promoting us, such as (not that we have this yet, but we're considering!!) a members-only-exclusive-can't-buy-anywhere GrooveLily Petal Pushers T-shirt, proclaiming to the world that you are a dedicated member of the Quality Music Revolution. 3) Access to a Petal-Pusher *exclusive* section of our website, where you'll find recordings of unreleased GrooveLily demos and live shows, as well as candid pictures and stories from the road that nobody else gets to see. 4) Bragging rights, due to the list of the top Petal Pushers which will be prominently displayed on the main page of www.groovelily.com. 5) The priceless satisfaction which comes only from the knowledge that you're making the world a better place. Join the revolution! Be a Petal Pusher! ********************** 4. Our Music Is On TV! ********************** That's right. We've hit the big time: the soaps are using our music. "The Young And The Restless," that bastion of daytime drama, has featured two tracks from Valerie's 1994 album, "Inhabit My Heart"! Both "Home" and the title track were recently utilized as background music for crucial scenes, underscoring moments of budding love and heartbreaking....heartbreak. We've signed a contract with Barbara Jordan's company "Heavy Hitters," which focuses on placing pop music in film and television. Barbara really digs our music, and is confident we'll see a lot more placements. Woo hoo! (Thanks to Tina DeVaron, NYC Songstress, for making the recommendation and introduction.) ********************************************* 5. Photo Gallery/Lyrics/Other Website Updates ********************************************* The new GrooveLily photo gallery is now available for your viewing pleasure: http://www.groovelily.com/index2.html?gallery There are already a bunch of recent pictures there, and we intend to upload new ones as we find them, and older ones throughout the coming months. If anyone wants to submit snapshots from GrooveLily events, please send them to: photos@groovelily.com If you do wish to send us your photos, please resize them so that they're no larger than 450 pixels wide or tall. 72dpi resolution, JPG preferred. Thanks! Other new things on the website include: 1) In response to many queries, we have finally uploaded the lyrics to all of our published songs! Enjoy. http://www.groovelily.com/index2.html?audiovideo 2) Brendan's epic RV Journal (Chapter 1) can be found in "Tales From The Road" at the following address: http://www.groovelily.com/index2.html?brendanrv 3) We're sold out of Women's baby-doll T-shirts with black ribbing. More Women's shirts coming next season! ******************************************* 6. A 4-Day GrooveLily Cruise In The Bahamas ******************************************* We're exploring the possibility of going on a "fan" cruise, and would love to know if you're interested! These cruises are generally 4-day, 3-night cruises in the Bahamas, leaving from somewhere in Florida. The cruise costs approximately $400-$450, which includes everything from when you arrive to when you leave (i.e. all food and lodging on the ship is included, transportation to the ship is not included). GrooveLily will perform on the cruise, and we'll also be hanging with you guys, soaking up the sun. Right now we're just collecting email addresses of those of you who might be interested. This is by no means any sort of commitment; we just want to get a feel for the number of people, and then we'll figure out the whos, whats, whys, and wheres. If this sounds like your idea of a good time (and it certainly sounds like our idea of a good time) then visit the page listed below: http://www.groovelily.com/index2.html?cruise Alternatively, you can just send an email to cruise@groovelily.com and tell us who you are and that you're interested. ************************************************************* 7. Rob Bond's New Yahoo Discussion Group "The GrooveLily Pad" ************************************************************* In addition to Jean Hsu's *Lily Grove*, there is a new online GrooveLily appreciation site: Rob Bond's GrooveLily Pad. In his words: YAHOO! has a lot of Clubs related to various interests, including music. Much to my dismay there was no GrooveLily club, so I corrected this incredible injustice by creating the "GrooveLily Pad" (http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/groovelily). Rob's club has photos that are unavailable elsewhere, as well as candid discussion about GrooveLily music, live performances, and a nice collection of "I first heard GrooveLily when..." stories. We're psyched that Rob's GrooveLily Pad is there, and we're psyched that SOMEBODY is out there correcting incredible injustices on our behalf--we're too busy driving and playing shows. ********************************************************* 8. The Email-List Referral Giveaway Program: Final Month! ********************************************************* We'd like to take a moment to congratulate all of the fine people who have taken the time and effort to tell their friends about the Lily and convince them to get in touch with us through email. Thank you, people. (applause applause applause) In addition to our first 2 winners, DAN ALPERT of Hollywood, FL and NICKI SUTHERLAND of Columbus, GA, we have a new winner, who has proven herself to be a true GrooveLily maven: the lovely and talented NICHOLE HILBURN, of Quakertown, PA! Congratulations, Nichole!! As we enter the final month of this contest, several of you are very close to becoming winners (especially you, Bud Pierce and Claire Doppman), and need only 1 or 2 more referrals to get a free CD. Please see the end of this newsletter for instructions and guidelines. Only one more month to win! **************************** 9. What We're Listening To *************************** During this period of RV adjustment, we are temporarily without a CD player, and we haven't been able to listen to a lot of new music. We have, however, kept up on the "book on tape" front, and here are some of our recommendations: In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship "Essex" by Nathaniel Philbrick This one sure made us drink a lot of water while we drove. In 1841, a whaling ship from Nantucket was hunting in the Pacific Ocean, and one angry sperm whale attacked it twice, puncturing its hull and sending it down to the depths. 21 men attempted to survive in the three small hunting boats that remained, and the story of how most of them died of thirst or hunger while the survivors resorted to cannibalism is one of the most harrowing stories we've ever heard. Surviving crew members *returned* to whaling after recovering from their ordeal, and one crew member told his story to a very young Melville, who went on to incorporate some of the gruesome details into Moby Dick. Reservation Road by John Burnham Schwartz A brilliant bifurcated story of a hit-and-run accident and its consequences for two men: the driver, and the father of the boy who is fatally injured by the accident. The book shifts constantly between the perspectives of these two men and how they deal with the aftermath of an unthinkable tragedy. Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond A combination of a history of civilization on our planet and a refutation of scientific "evidence" for racist beliefs, this book seeks to explain why some groups of people in some places on the planet became more technologically advanced before others. Why were Spaniards able to conquer the Aboriginal Central Americans in the 1500's? Why were New Guineans still in the stone age while Europeans were entering an age of industry? The answer is complicated, but it has nothing whatsoever to do with the people themselves, and everything to do with climate and location during the last 10,000 years. Totally fascinating. Ku Klux Klan, eat your heart out. ************************************************************ 11.
