Sorry if I got the title wrong. Dickey Chapelle sighting: (sort of. well, not really) while reading "A Bright And Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America In Viet Nam" by Neil Sheehan, a book I highly recommend if you can stomach a story about a consummate womanizer who makes Roderigo Borgia look like a saint, I learned that the beach Chu Lai, near which Dickey was smithereened, which is just south of Quang Tri and the DMZ (and a warren of tunnels similar to Cu Chi), was named by a US sergeant after his "chinese" name which he learned in Shanghai. Also I learned that David Halberstam was annoyed by Dickey's nemesis Marguerite Higgins, who, fresh from Korea, was finding all the "good" stories and reporting to the US that America was winning the war, against which his stories for the NYT seemed pessimistic. He sent a cable to his agent in New York that read, "If you mention that Higgins woman one more time I will quit repeat I will quit." I bet Dickey knew how he felt! That's it! Sorry it wasn't more. Someone needs to re-visit chapelle's life and leave out her "love affair with the Marines." She captured the bloody pearls of war so well. b-dette, "war was bound to steal the end of dickey chapelle" and John Paul Vann Sign Up Today - Only $9.95 per month! http://my.netzero.net/s/signup?r=platinum&refcd=PT97 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 11:44:50 EDT From: Fantine729@aol.com Subject: Re: [jangle-poets] info pls + dickey chapelle sighting In a message dated 8/30/2001 5:04:21 AM Eastern Daylight Time, bern.gallagher@netzero.net writes: > Which album is "Morning Come To Me" on? Speaking of which (Mr Vance Gilbert) Jamie-lou asked on the Nook about the "Eliza Jane" song - not sure I ever saw an answer - do any Janglers know what the song is called and what CD it might be on . 'pologies if the question was answered and I missed it. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 17:43:05 -0400 From: "Jim Coffin" Subject: [jangle-poets] RE : shameless self-promotion Harry wrote : >One might also point out that the Kennedys have the most prime >appearances in my video Images of FRFF 2001, which can be seen at >www.hakmusic.com. That isn't self-promotion, Harry, it's supporting the cause! I've experienced such enjoyment from this site - I'd love to be able to go there and order VHS tapes (hint hint hint); an "album" of these recordings! I think you've reached the critical mass where you could really tell a story with all the material you've got in the collection. And on a related note ... anyone going to the 09-29-01 Acoustic Cafe show http://www.acousticafe.com/index.shtml in beautiful, downtown Bridgeport? The last time Pete and Maura were there they rocked the place, so this show is high on my short list of things to do in September. ~jim ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V3 #147 **********************************
