A mythical place where dreams dwell and imagination becomes = reality. When I first happened upon the band known as Gandalf Murphy & the = Slambovian Circus of Dreams it seemed as if it was by accident. I am = certain now that it was not. It was three years ago at a place called = Hopfields. They were participating in an open mic. When they walked into = the room I sensed something incredible was going to unfold. They looked = as if they had fallen out of a Charlie Chaplin film after taking some = time to hang with the Magical Mystery Tour. With the first notes of " = Silent Revolution " they blew me away. Their songs seemed to fill a void = that has been missing since the glory days of Rock music. Ghosts filled = the room. Each week a group of us would trek up to Bedford to hear these folk play = a couple songs. Satisfied with a few tasty morsels we would return = again for yet another feeding. I had to hear them play an entire show = even if it meant booking them myself. The first Hammond House Concert = was on October 31st 1998 with Gandalf Murphy freezing on the stage as = they played to a hundred costumed Halloweeners gathered around a bon = fire. It was their first show as Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus = of Dreams. Later I would come to find out that this was not their first = experience on the stage. As an earlier incarnation they had played = Carnegie Hall with Nigel Kennedy and received a standing ovation. They = had also been the first American Rock band to play in China. They had = received praise internationally and were well on their way to the major = league. What had happened is a long and complicated story. Suffice to say that = they had become disillusioned with the music industry. So as the offers = came in to sign them to a major label they gracefully took leave to = quietly ponder the meaning of life and find themselves. Joziah Longo, = the bands ring master, began writing songs which seemed to conjure up = the spirits from Rock n' Roll Heaven. He appropriated everything that he = loved. " Isn't that what Rock n' Roll is all about? " he would say = without defense. He sought out simplicity over complicated productions, = incorporating elements of Country, Folk, Psychedelia and Gospel. He = returned to his roots and put a derby on his head. It is no coincidence = that their last album, before becoming Gandalf Murphy, pictured a couple = of clowns passing through a cosmic doorway into the great unknown. = Slambovia was already in the making. Three years after the birth of Gandalf Murphy they are taking the Hudson = Valley by storm. Selling out shows and collecting rave reviews. Recently = their song " Already Broken " was accepted on a Paul McCartney sponsored = compilation CD " A Garland for Linda " which should be released in = October of this year with over 20,000 copies pre-sold. After being the = first officially accepted song from many submissions across the country = they pulled another Hammond House artist onto the McCartney band = wagon...Terence Martin with his song " Waterproof ". I predict many = great things are under way for my Slambovian friends.=20 It is a real pleasure bringing this show to you. We've let our = imaginations go wild to make this a special event. As Gandalf picks up = momentum we see multimedia shows as part of the Circus of Dreams. This = will be an experiment in that direction. We've got magic, lights, film = and some jugglers creating an ambiance of festivity and mind travel. If = you haven't heard Gandalf before you owe yourself a treat. Come and = enjoy.
