Stephen & Peter were both totally psyched to get signed Kennedys posters and get songs dedicated to them (along with Kate's kids) by Pete & Maura. The 3 of us worked on our "Life Is Large" parody ("Yay For Yay") the whole car ride home to CT. Great seeing Kate and her Tribe both days; the tall blonde and handsome Baab at Equation (who *rock* I might add); the Conemeister at Thursday's show --- and special thanks to Shannon for everything! Y 4 Y! Musikfest has got to be one of the best FREE music festivals in the country. Thanks ever so much to Kate for the really hot tip, WRT some really cool music! :-) Kennedys at Bethlehem Musikfest, Liederplatz Stage, Wed. 8/8/01, 3:30 Life Is Large Coo Coo Wall of Death (Richard Thompson) Rappahannock Jesse (for Kate Riess) Orange Blossom Special Right As Rain Rave On (Buddy Holly) Oh Boy (Buddy Holly) Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly) 4:30 set Pick You Up Highway 10 River of Fallen Stars You Ain't Going Nowhere (Bob Dylan) Can't Kill Hope With a Gun (tearful Maura intro that transfixed the crowd) Pearl's Eye View (for Gracie) Run Red Lights Kennedys at Bethlehem Musikfest, Cabaret Stage, Thur. 8/9/01, 5:30 Life Is Large, segue to Walking on Sunshine (Katryna & the Waves) Winterheart Big River (Johnny Cash) Free (for Stephen, Peter, Natalie & Gracie) River of Fallen Stars Common Bond House on Fire, segue to Bus Stop (Hollies) Crazy (Willie Nelson-Patsy Cline) Chelsea Embankment, segue to Jamming 6:30 set!!! They played 8-10 songs I'd never heard TK do live before. They know so many songs! The second set alone of Thursday's Cabaret Stage show made that one of my top Kennedys shows ever, and well worth the entire trip. One special note about Maura's tearful song intro for "Can't Kill Hope with a Gun." This was one of those defining moments for me, a defining Kennedys moment at any rate, like a shaft of light coming through the clouds, suddenly putting everything in a whole new light. I live for humanizing moments like this. Maura was all choked up about a story she'd read in the paper that day about a minister whose car had been spray-painted with racist slurs, and how that person's friends had all dropped everything to rally around him in a show of moral support. Maura's crying interfered with her ability to sing the next song, "Can't Kill Hope with a Gun," but it was a reality check that transcended the dictates of "business as usual," I thought. For me it was the instant realization that TK are more, much more than just entertainment; and for just that one brief moment the show business facades were dissolved, and there was just this one caring person (Maura) sharing a really personal moment with everyone else, about something she felt really strongly about. "What are we for if not for this?" The "love and peace" veneer of Kennedys Grooviness is not a veneer at all: it cuts down deep, right down to the roots of what they're all about. The Kennedys look to be as much Easy People as the "Easy People" Nields themselves, if not even more so, which is saying a lot. TK have "a little flower power of their own"...! :-) And boy do they ever know how to put on a great show, too. Yay for Maura!! Yay for Pete!! and Yay for Yay!!! :-) Bruce Visit The Nields on the web at http://www.nields.com The Nields Nook FAQ is at http://www.nields.com/nields_nook_faq.htm Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Aug 2001 00:37:27 -0400 (EDT) From: "Elizabeth (Libby) Wiebel" Subject: [jangle-poets] what mary travers doesn't know... I always get this great nostalgic teary kind of happy-joy thing going on when I get to hear Peter, Paul, and Mary... and tonight was no exception. Per tradition, Mary came out and did her little storytelling bit... chattering to the audience at Wolf Trap about this and that... But then, she starts to tell us about this great idea that _she_ had.... about how we should all take our tax refunds (those of us who get them) and donate them to some worthy cause neglected by the current political administration... Her suggestion was some inner-city school who doesn't get adequate funding. But anyway... point is... she obviously wasn't aware that this was not _her_ idea... I shouted "Let's GIVE IT BACK" from the crowd... and she said, "YEAH!!" Someone should fill her in on where the idea _originally_ came from... *grin* What a musical weekend... much enhanced by the Kennedys helping me in my celebration of my "divorce" from some unmentioned governmental department... I won't get into it... but let's just say that my "commitment" to them is over... and I ain't gonna study war no more! ~*~peace to all~*~ Take good care, Libby - -- - --------------------------------- Libby Wiebel | ewiebel@cs.wm.edu http://www.cs.wm.edu/~ewiebel - ----------------------------------------------------- "I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I just lived the length of it.
