The weather was scetchy. Still I had every reason 2 go 4 it, & go 4 it I did. After work on friday I set out 4 Atlantic City 2 hang out W/ Larry, spend the night, & C how much work we could get done B4 I had 2 head up 2 Norwalk sat AM. Larry has spent a lot of time on his garden & it is in full bloom providing a bounty of fresh vegetables 2 feast apon. I gassed up in S.Jersey @ $1.19/ gal. In the AM we listened 2 The Risk Involved X Mary Sue Twohy W/ our coffee. This CD was produced X P&M Kennedy & features the backing harmony of Maura W/ Pete playing various embellishments. Her cover of Luray Women put this CD on my 'must have' list & rightfully so... I'm listening as I type. Running a little behind, I met up W/ Melissa & Kate mid afternoon & they introduced me 2 Sydney, who would B my host 4 the weekend. We arrived @ the SoNo Arts Festival just in time 2 catch Gandolf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus Of Dreams as they were taking 2 the stage. So who do I run in2 in the crowd? None other than Cadence Carroll (Y4Y!), Rick Rock (Hammond House), who R both huge Slambovian supporters... bigger than... (oops, I can't go there). Cotter (Wilton/GOTV) was doing the sound. The Circus Of Dreams is a mystery, an inigma rapped in a conundrum. Honestly, I still don't know what 2 think of them. Their CD is called A Good Theif Tips His Hat & I'm putting it on 4 the 1st time right now... More about the Circus later... We stayed 4 the lion's share of the set, which ended @ 5PM, picked up Kristen & beat it on up the line 2 New Haven Green. I bailed out as the crew searched 4 a parking spot & proceeded 2 get down 2 buisness. Sheilia was literally the 1st person I spoke 2. She in4med me that the opening act had just finished which meant that we had made it just in the nic of time! Lee Raymond was there, set up W/ his new Sony videocam. Jen & Jo were there from Syracuse. Paula came down from Fricksburg (?). Matt, Carol, & Ted, from Harrisburg were joined X April who had come down from Boston (?). Joe & Sarah were there from Danbury, Elizabeth & her Mom from Vt, Jenna, Andrianna, & Beaner from NoHo... In other words, folks came from far & wide 4 this 'last' full band show. Jim, Bern, Melissa, Shelia, & myself formed a qourum of JanglePoets. The Nookers must have gotten there early because they scarfed up all the good front row seats from the Darlings... D&N's new puppy, Mia NiELdS was called 2 the stage durring the show & KN sang Doctor W/ a straight face. Having just opened 4 Dar in Englewood, NJ on thurs. nite, the songs perfmed W/ Dar came off much more relaxed than the FRFF collaborations W/ the Xception of Jennifer, which 2 my ear sounded a little rough. I like it better W/O Dar... This was Ashley's 1st appearence on stage W/ TN. Yay Ashley, good job! U R a babe! After the show Kristen guided us 2 Mamoun's where we were joined X Bruce & Lee 4 the best falafal ($2.50) & turkish coffee that can B had in New Haven. No trip 2 New Haven is complete W/O a stop @ Mamoun's. It blows the 1 on Manhattan away! Melissa didn't have the coffee, so she actually got some sleep. Kate & I tossed & turned all night long. Poor Kate... she had 2 B @ work @ the bakery X 6AM & I don't think she slept a wink. Well, now we know Kate. @ least we had a great Kennedys video 2 watch while Melissa rested. After a continental breakfest @ the bakery Melissa blew my mind W/ a visit 2 Stew Leonard's... What an Xperience that was! We even found rare white peaches, which had actually come up in our conversation earlier. Stew Leonard's has it all... produce, dairy, fresh meat, everything but scrapple. It's like a grocery mall W/ animated puppets that put on shows thruout the store... Lots of free samples. If U've never been 2 Stew's U don't know what U R missing. I want 2 have my b-day party there next year! Cadence Carroll can sing the whole Stew Leonard's jingle. I would encourage every1 2 request it the next time U C her. I can't believe she didn't put it on her CD... We arrived back @ the SoNo Arts Festival just in time 2 catch Kris Delmhorst W/ her new band including Mark Erelli on electric guitar. What a treat! Matt, Carol, TEd, & April were already in the front row. Bruce, Steven, & Peter rammbled in & a good time was had X all in the hot blazing sun. Kris' songs R very engaging & her sound was loud, clear, & powerful. I can't wait 2 C her again... She's just so darned lovable! Her skirt matched Mark's shirt & it was all I could do 2 restrain myself from going up & taking a great big bite out of her leg. This, of course, had nothing 2 do W/ her fine per4mance & selection of songs. Bruce & Co. then followed Melissa & I over 2 the singer/ songwriter stage where we were 4tunate 2 get 2 catch most of Christina Abbott's full band set. Christina is a soulful singer & great guitar player who was recommended X Cadence Carroll. Cady was in the audience rocking down 2 the soulful sound. The SoNo Arts Fest is a great time & a good place 2 catch some of your favorite artists 4 free, & free is good! Melissa & I had heard rumors of another free show up the road in Wilton so we pulled out of Norwalk, picked up Sydney, & headed out 2 Mervin Meadows where we were treated 2 another freebee X a skinny, sharp witted, smart alec named... Martin Scrimshaw... no that's not it... Marshal Crawdad... no that's not it either... wait... MARSHAL CRENSHAW, that's it! There ought 2 B a law against guys like this... guys who have written lots of songs U've heard on the radio but have no idea who did them. Marshal is a funny, funny man & a great songwriter. When I asked him if I could tape he said, "I don't care." YES! This is the right answer! After the show when some1 asked if he had CDs 4 sale he said, "I don't have time 4 that. They're in the store." God, I love this man's attitude! I M so glad that the Kennedys aroused my curiosity enough 2 have me stop X this per4mance. It was a great way 2 cap off a double hat trick weekend! Crenshaw encored W/ Walk Away Renee as night decended on Mervin Meadows & Sydney, Melissa, & I headed back 2 Sydney's place B4 we all went our separate ways early monday AM. Well, Melissa & I, that is. Sydney doesn't get out that often, but judging from the smile on his face he'll B looking 4ward 2 next year's Wilton Folk Fest concert series. It's amazing how a little roast duck can change your whole perspective, ay Syd? Day1 4AUG01: Gandolph Murphy & the Slambovian Circus Of Dreams The NiELdS Dar Williams Day2 5AUG01: Kris Delmhorst Band Christina Abbott Band Marshal Crenshaw Thanks 2 every1 who made this possible, especially Sydney. Yay 4 another 500 miler! Y4Y!
