I've been lucky enough to see P&M in several small venues over the past few years and, as great as the albums are, it's the live performances where they really connect. The studio albums are like sneak previews and reminders of how great the shows are. So I was expecting to like 'Positively Live' and indeed it's the best Kennedys recording ever. The extended jams, especially 'Sirens', are fantastic to get lost in and having Pete's instrumentals in the mix is awesome; the sound is superb. If you don't have it yet - get it now. But no Philly-area dates this time out? Although we live in the Philly suburbs, my wife and I have been down to Andy's in Chestertown MD a couple of times to see Baltimore-area artist Kevin Johnson (check him out at www.kevinjohnson.com; his latest album 'Sunday Driver' is especially good). Andy's is a great place to see a show - like being in your own living room with personal service. Unfortunately we were booked last weekend. I guess we'll have to motor up to Bethlehem, PA in August. I was taken aback by the latest (my first) newsletter. Judging from some of the recent posts, I apparently wasn't the only one. Politics is always a prickly topic and P&M poured it on thick. A question for Pete & Maura: Undoubtedly you're aware of the controversial nature of politics, as most of your songs are apolitical, yet your politics seem very important to you. But is there anything to be gained by airing the politics versus the likelihood that a significant portion of your fans will be alienated by the nature of the pitch? I ask this because I've talked with several other musicians with large regional followings who have advocated political stances in their fan communications, and I think they automatically assume that their entire fan base agrees with them politically. But this is rarely the case with bands whose music isn't political to begin with. Just wondering what your thought are. It has always seemed to me that you can enjoy the art whether or not you agree with the politics. Many conservatives enjoyed Sinatra, even though they weren't supportive of his politics or reputed mob connections. Likewise, liberals might have enjoyed some of John Wayne's films, while disagreeing with his views. I think Pete and Maura are to be applauded for suggesting a charitable option in their "Give It Back" campaign. They showed sensitivity to their fans who may not necessarily be Democrats. Me...I'm inclined to spend at least some of the tax rebate picking up a few more copies of Kennedys CDs to share with some friends!!!
