Blame EFO for the name... they're the ones that coined it! So... every year they get this great mix of performers... all styles, all localities, some quite independent and local, some quite well known. The past 2 or 3 years have included performances by Eddie From Ohio, Lucy Kaplansky, John Gorka, John McCutcheon, Iona, and more... some of my faves! So... I thought, why in the world haven't The Kennedys played at one of my very favorite locations??? So... being the "speak your mind" kind of person I usually am, I just went right ahead and asked them (the library, that is)... And here's the response that I got. Pete and Maura, if you're out there listening... I hope there's no offense in my little promotion of you to the library... please come to Williamsburg!! *grin* And everyone else... if you're anywhere near Williamsburg, I'd totally recommend you check out the Dewey Decibal schedule... there's really some great stuff, and the venue is super. www.wrl.org/programs/concerts.html The summer schedule is kind of light... but they'll go full force again once fall hits. Libby... shameless promoter of things, people, and events that she truly loves and believe in! - -- - ------- Libby Wiebel ewiebel@cs.wm.edu http://www.cs.wm.edu/~ewiebel - ---------------------------------- "Speak your mind, even if your voice shakes." ~ Maggie Kuhn - ---------------------------------- - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 09:07:36 -0400 From: Program Services Department To: "Elizabeth (Libby) Wiebel" Subject: Re: dewey decibal concerts Thanks for your suggestion. Surely the irony of supporting the DNC with money brought (back) to you by a Republican initiative is appealing. But I also understand that there are some folks who believe all politics stink, on either side of the aisle. That's perfectly cool. They are entitled to disagree with the suggestion of supporting Democrats or any other political party, and the democratic (pun intended) thing to do is to agree with their right to disagree. I urge posters to this list however to carefully consider the charities they wish to support, given the current political climate. For example, I followed my father's long standing tradition of supporting the Salvation Army my whole life -- until yesterday. I found articles in The Washington Post and elsewhere that the Army had entered into a secret pact with the Bush administration to back his faith-based charity initiative in return for the president's support for their plan to take federal money and discriminate against employees based on sexual preference. This illustrates why it is bad policy for the government to fund religious organizations in any way, shape or form. Regardless of the fact that the Salvation Army gave my father a place to stay and food to eat after World War II -- which prompted our lifelong support of the institution -- I am sure he would agree with me now that further support of such a discriminatory and calculating organization would be morally reprehensible. We also were both heavily involved in Boy Scouting, but that group has since shown its true colors as well and no longer gets any support from me or my family. So, thanks P&M for giving us a great idea. - -- Jay "Life may not be exactly pleasant, but it is at least not dull." - --H.L.
