I've spent 4 of the last 5 weekends camping in the rain. Good thing I love the rain & it hasn't been 2 cold. Last weekend proved 2 B no Xception. Thursday evening the Kennedys played a benefit 4 the Virginia Democratic party @ the State Theatre in Falls Church, VA. The Megan Hayes band opened the show W/ about an hour long set of heartfelt originals. Good harmonies were evident W/ this 3 piece unit (2 guitars & a piano). Pete & Maura per4med a hour long set that was standard & well played W/ no surprizes, & was well recieved X a thinning audience that @ no time numbered more than 50 people. The low turn out was a little depressing & I hope is no reflection on the Virginia Democratic party @ large, 4 if it is, they have a state of emergency down there! The Kennedys show @ the Point in Bryn Mawr, PA, proved 2 B a wonderful evening of new songs & the 1st attempt @ a few classic covers (Marvin Gaye, the Beatles). Bern showed up & bought me coffee as I had done 4 her the very 1st time we met... @ the Point last fall when the Probe played. So I guess we're even now. Bern covered the show quite wll in her reveiw & I can think of nothing 2 add. I did run in2 1 of the Appel Farm Irregulars, Bart, who seems 2 show up regularly 4 the Kennedys @ the Point. Tay from OuttaSights & Sounds was also in the audience, as were the vollunteer coordinators from WXPN having a staff meeting. After the show I headed up 2ward Conneticut in a torrential driving rain. The going was slow so I crashed out in a rest area on I-287 2 the rythem of the rain on the roof. It was still raining as I headed out in the morning which persisted until I crossed the Tappan-Zee. The rain stopped & X the time I reached Bridgeport I was catching glimpses of blue sky & the pavement was dry. As I pulled in2 the parking lot, Bern & Jim were sitting on a sidewalk table waiting 4 the show 2 begin. Cady was busy attending 2 last minute details like a chicken W/ her head cut off... What a line up of very talented friends & local per4mers! I was especially impressed W/ Dan Bonis & his great assortment of slide guitars. He started W/ his Hawaiian guitar, then 2 the lap steel, & finished up W/ the resoniphonic guitar (sometimes mistakenly refered 2 as a dobro). Bruce & JourneyBear were nowhere 2 B seen but our friend Greg drove over from Long Island. Greg & I 1st met @ the Stony Man Mtn 'Life Is Large' hike & it was a pleasant surprize 2 C him @ the Acoustic Cafe. After the show Greg & I had dinner @ the Black Rock Oyster Bar, a great little place just off the I-95 exit... Good chowder, good fish & chips! I headed out 4 Atlantic City about 7PM under blue sky & sunshine. As soon as I crossed the Hudson torrential rains commenced & followed me all the way 2 S Jersey... but I was headed 2ward Allen's Clam Bar & that thought compelled me onward... This weekend I will B camping out in the rain again @ the Gathering Of The Vibes in Red Hook, NY. Tom Tom Club & Joules Graves R on the bill & that's all I need 2 know. I LOVE Joules Graves (she did an unannounced short set @ FestivalInThePines last year)! R there any other Joules Graves fans out there? Meet me @ the Vibes... Great reveiws Bern! Man, U nook/ janglepoet people R really out of the loop (listening 2 too much canadian crapola, no doubt)! Joules is a poet/ percussionist who lived in the deep forests of the pacific NW. She is a Rainbow sister who sings songs of the earth mother & the empowerment of women accompanied only X her drumming. Last summer was the 1st time 2 my knowledge that Joules came out of the forest 2 perf4m her songs B4 festival audiences. Her travels brought her 2 NoHo last year & she was asked 2 play between the set changes @ FestivalInThePines 2000. Joules played 3 songs on the mainstage durring the afternoon. It was a wonderful Xperience 4 those who were paying attention... These R tunes that would go well W/ any sweat lodge. U do know what a sweat lodge (inipi) is, don't U? It's the finest community activity that has ever been developed 2 promote healing, cleansing, & community cohesivness... Go figure?
