I had gone to a reunion in Shelton of people who used to work at one of my old jobs - AVCO Lycoming. Allied Signal bought the whole place about seven years ago and shut the plant down (that's one way to beat the competition!). The gathering was pretty poorly attended and I had a reservation to see Pamela Means at the AcoustiCafe, so I bade my former coworkers farewell and hit the road. Bridgeport is only one exit (about three miles) down the Merritt, and who should "beep-beep" me but the merch mensch herself. My first confirmed highway folk encounter - and it was a hat trick! I registered hits for Dar, Nields and Kennedys in one fleeting drive by. And Pamela was fantastic. She wails on that guitar! ~jim Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 01:41:09 -0400 From: bern Subject: [jangle-poets] kennedys radio show saturday evening and very brief review Hail Janglers! Just home from the Kennedys gig @ the Point in Bryn Mawr, PA, which I discovered with glee is only 25 minutes from my house on the train, including walking time. Yay for pedicular and electric transportation! Writing at this late hour to let y'all know about a radio show P+M taped today. It's going to be aired on WETA in Washington DC tomorrow, well, er, tonight, being Saturday early AM. It will run in the evening. The Estimated Time of Airplay was "Eight-ish". Maybe a local call to WETA is in order. Conehead says it's 90.9, even though it's supposed to be 91. Please check it out and record this show, if you're in the area. Now for the setlist. Great show with a few surprises: Life Is Large Rappahannock Come Into My Kitchen River Of Falling Stars (dedicated to the volunteers of WXPN) Eau de Joie (you know, the Bach piece, pardon me if I titled it wrong) Wall Of Death As I Went Out One Morning (the spooky Dylan tune) Pick You Up Distant Thunder (Cone's request) Pearl's Eye View (YAY!) Common Bond Shear Water Can't Kill Hope With A Gun (part of 3 song requests from audience) Henry David Free (my request) ****NEW SONG**** Get It Right, which M intro'ed as a Nod in the diection of soul. Right at the end What's Going On, the classic Marvin Gaye song, very stirring rendition Didn't It Rain, also a new song, but one we've been lucky to hear before Sirens ****FIRST TIME!!****All I Need Is You To Get By also by Marvin Gaye, co-written by Peter Fuller? Pete told me the other composer's name but I didn't catch it well. This is a song P+M did to grant a request for a "happy couple" song. It definitely fit the bill. :-) Orange Blossom Special Life Is Large (cont.) ENCORES!! A very nice girl and her friend showed up just in time for the Encore. She is a great artist and is getting the bass slap down too. I missed her name too Cone didn't, but he won't tell me what it is. Anyway, Pete asked her, since she'd just arrived, if there was something she wanted to hear and she said, "That song about Revolution." And Maura said, "Revolution #9"? Well, they didn't play THAT Beatles tune (which would have been interesting) but they did play, also from the White Album, "Revolution," a/k/a in common parlance, "You Say You Want A Revolution." They may not have had all the words down, but it was truly brilliant. I thought I saw Maura transmogrify into Paul at the end of the song. Encore #2: Run Red Lights, one of my very favorite Kennedys songs. I was bold enough to sit right in front of Pete to observe his mastery. I am not enough of a guitarhead to discuss his genius, but I'm glad I got to see some of the standard (and some from left field) moves from a few feet away. AND it was AWESOME to see the brand spanking new, shrink-wrapped, beautifully packaged Positively Live. I would have bought a copy for a friend, but I had to get Evolver. Sometimes selfish is good, but now, more than ever, this is one recording(s) you don't want to miss. Ooops, this wasn't a brief review after all. Oh well. Virginia is a lucky state. Off to Connecticut for Cady's CD benefit!
