Which rhymes with Georgette, Nope, you're not wrong, and I haven't yet found out why it's Margaret for that clip. The pictures are hers, I believe, and the picture at the end is definitely of herself......it's clearly Dickey. I've contacted the historical society to try to shed some light on this for myself (I used to be a reporter and some habits die hard). As for her capturing the war in a different way than "official" military photographers, well, most of the time, other photographers and journalists only spent a couple of hours in the field. Dickey lived with the troops for weeks or months. Whatever they did, she did and/or followed them while they did it. I think that made all the difference. Also, there was a lot of censorship going on during the wars -- journalists needed to have their copy and photos approved by the State Department before they could be published. Dickey was continuously frustrated by the fact that no one seemed willing to show what was going on, especially in Vietnam. The picture she took of a jump-ready marine in a helicopter with a gun in his lap WAS printed by National Geographic (who didn't feel particularly compelled to get State Department approval) and caused a major ruckus because at that time, Americans were being told "there isn't a war going on over there.....troops are not engaged in battle." Of course, this is exactly what Dickey wanted to prove. I'll join you in your worshipful fascination Bern....I just finished her bio and have the autobiography coming in a few days (and that's supposed to be much better than the bio). I am amazed, inspired, and, mostly, in awe. Dickey is the type of person I wanted to be when I grew up.....and since she didn't even learn to parachute until she was 40, there's still hope for me! Thinking back, the Lena show had some really special moments. They played an old B-side Byrds that has wonderful Everly-like harmonies, although I can't remember the name. Maura broke a string & while she was changing it Pete whipped out a Spanish classical guitar piece that doesn't get a lot of Xposure. It was wonderfully delicate, filled W/ sublime passion. Lena's rendering of Pearl's Eye View moved me 2 tears... the intro & timing just keep getting better @ each show... Yes, we had a lot 2 giggle about as we crossed the CT state line, picked up RT 44 & made tracks 4 W.Hartford.The only turn we missed all weekend was the right on Main St, but it didn't take long 2 find our mistake. The dinner choices were limited 2 Boston Market, which resulted in Bern having 2 hear things she wasn't supposed 2 hear 4 the remainder of the journey. Arriving @ the Universalist Unitarian church, we found the Kennedysmobile already on the scene, W/ Sheila, Cady, Jim, Alan, Harry (&family), & Bruce W/ Stephen soon 2 follow. Did I leave out any Nook/JanglePoets? We once again had a quorum & proceeded 2 get down 2 buisness W/ the Kennedys. Once again they outdid themselves X playing a song from Angel Fire (?) that doesn't get played much. Little help? Cady sang majestically, embellishing certain selections tastefully W/ grace & style becomming of the tune. Durring 1 of his improvasational moments Pete gently delivered a soft & seemless instrumental Somewhere Over The Rainbow... Absolutely fantastic! 4 me the icing on the cake was California Dreamin' W/ Cadence singing a 3rd part. I had mentioned 2 Pete the night B4 that John Phillips is a BIG kahuna & should B recognized as such... & honored he was in true Kennedys style, saving the best 4 last in the encore. @ some point I believe I said out loud, " I can't believe I'm following Bruce". Bruce was leading a 4 car convoy across the unsuspecting streets of W. Hartford. As soon as we pulled in2 the Golden Roc Diner I saw the Kennedys-mobile parked across the lot. 2 Bern's dismay I answered NON-smoking 2 the host & we were escorted 2 the empty both across from Cadence & the Kennedys! What a treat... We had 1 person 2 many so Sheila got 2 sit W/ Cady, the lucky dawg. Once again our party was treated 2 a few things they weren't suppose 2 hear, but I'm still blamming that on Boston Market. No clams though... What kind of place R they running there? After hugs & handshakes Bern & I headed west & disappeared in2 the springy dew 2 eventually wake in a NY rest area 2 an unmerciful sunny Easter Sunday AM. After a leisurly meander across central NJ & a smooth glide along the Delaware, I dropped Bern @ 30th St Sta & still made it back 2 Delaware in time 4 Easter dinner. 850 miles round trip from the minute the car rolled out of the repair shop. Another successful test drive.
