This is very cool! Thanks 4 a great post Sheila. I'm affraid I don't understand the jist of her quote. What do U think she's trying 2 say? I'm fairly sure it was cut down to be exactly a minute (Wisconsin public television shows these one-minute clips in between their shows or something). What I thought she was saying was that if everyone at some point in their lives had to spend some time in a military field hospital and/or on a battle field, witnessing firsthand the needless destruction of life and limb, war would no longer be an acceptable option. As it is now, it's an experience usually reserved for only the young (and mostly male) of any given population. Those who sign the orders for war, police actions, etc., have often never been on a battlefield or in a field hospital, and are so far removed from the reality of what's happening that it's impossible for it to be meaningfully real for them. They get to go home to comfortable and safe houses, eat with their families, and sleep in a warm bed safe from the worry of being killed during the night. They can walk to their bathroom in the dark without worrying about stepping on a land mine. While a lot can be garnered from video and pictures, I still think it can't be anything like being there in the midst of it all, with the sounds and smells and sights and tactile stimuli, all unedited and unfiltered. One doesn't fear for their lives while watching a video, even a very well-produced one, because you know you're safe. So, that's what I think she was saying. Send all these politicians (their wives, their constituents, presidents of munitions companies, etc.) to muck through swamps and jungles, stepping around bodies and body parts, have them serve duty in the OR, and maybe they'd think twice about whether war was really the answer. I just thought it was so cool to hear her voice, recorded before most of us were born. It reminded me a little bit of an audio-only take on Pete's (and Joe Hansard's) "Channel 3."
