The DC police were very kind and believed me when I truthfully told them I had no idea HOW I ended up in the HOV-4 lane somewhere near the Pentagon. That whole exit scene for route one/Jefferson Davis Highway really confuses me. The first big thrill came with meeting lister Rhiannon and her boyfriend Corbie for the first time, and some other Nookers. Don Semmens was also around, and I had the honor of meeting him later on! This was the highest concentration of Jangle Poets ever assembled in one place (I think I counted six of us, which beats the last record by two)!! I then thought I might just explode when Cone came down to me and said ever so nonchalantly "hey, keep my friend here supplied with Diet Coke and by the way, Nanci Griffith is in the house right across the stage from you." We were both hoping hoping hoping she'd be joining Maura for Pearl's Eye View, and we weren't to be disappointed!! When she joined P&M for a couple of songs, I was in the back with Cone explaining how I could now die in a fiery crash on the way home, because my life just could not possibly be more complete than it was right then (mind you, I'm glad this didn't actually occur, though -- I just get really effusive and hyper when I'm excited :) The Kennedys' set list: Life is Large Instrumental melange River of Fallen Stars Angels Cry Run Red Lights Down, Down, Down Pearl's Eye View (with Nanci) Ride, Angel, Ride (subtitled: The Ballad of P&M, also with Nanci) Sirens The Nields' set: This Town is Wrong I Need a Doctor Snowman I Haven't Got a Thing Without You Georgia O Best Black Dress Strawberry Girl Barbie Poem One Hundred Names Easy People Superhero Soup HaHaHa portion #1 (The Kennedys and The Nields) Jeremy Newborn Street Mr. Right Now Keys to the Kingdom HeHeHeHe (David Nields, Dave Hower, Dave Chalfant and Pete ON BASS!): Talking to Tom HerHerHer (Katryna and Nerissa Nields and Maura): This Boy (The Beatles' This Girl, actually) HaHaHa #2: Love Shack Didn't It Rain Orphan Girl The Times They Are A-Changin' For What It's Worth Mr. Tambourine Man (with Mike Clem of EFO on tambourine) I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry People look at me quite oddly when I say I'm driving 16 hours round trip just to see a show in DC, but for a double bill of The Kennedys and The Nields, it's so totally worth it!! I know some have problems with the venue, but the Birchmere felt like home even the first time I walked in, and it is just simply magic for me. I think that's all I can say coherently on this subject.....I don't think I managed to sit still for five consecutive minutes that night -- the energy was just too raw to not be moved by it. Love Shack ROCKED and I was in the back dancing wondering how ANYONE could SIT STILL for that!! Oh, and I just have to add that for the first time EVER (there have been four attempts) I made it from Boston to DC and back without ANY automobile trouble. I rule! If there is anyone on NanciNet (that's Nanci's mailing list, right?) on here (I think a couple have come here via that route), can you e-mail me privately (either Fantine729@AOL.com or JanglePoets@AOL.com)?? I promise it will be worth your while. Thanks!! Last night (Saturday) I saw Melissa Ferrick TWICE right here in Richmond. Standing up from 5:30 until around midnight really tired me out. But Friday night was even more tiring. Even though I was sitting down it took all my energy not to leap up during both The Kenendys and The Nields sets. TN & TK at The Birchmere is always special, but Friday night had SO much icing on the concert cake: Seeing all those orange and blue t-shirts, meeting so many people on The Nook and visiting after the show, Nanci Griffith's guest appearance, Mike Clem's guest appearance, Her, Her, Her singing "This Boy (girl)", hearing "Love Shack" and "Orphan Girl" for the first time, the new TN songs, "For What It's Worth" (anybody get Maura's lyrics?). I only have 2 more things to say: 1). Lawrence Solomon had too much food at his party, and 2). I'm going after a government grant to find out if a bullfrog IS waterproof. don "It's all Folk music" -- Erin McKeown Don Semmens; Richmond, VA; donsem@concentric.net Visit my Regan Site http://www.concentric.net/~donsem/regan.htm Rob Buck Memorial Scholarship Fund http://gottabuck.org/ Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 20:36:10 -0400 From: Don Semmens Subject: [jangle-poets] Oops (and addendum) I just realized I meant the special verse on "The Times They Are A Changin'." Here's my rant: You know that top songs of the 20th Century thing that just came out?? Yeah, I know it's a very subjective list, but come on! No "Easy People??" No "River of Fallen Stars?" Actually, it's not the songs that didn't make the list that pissed me off, it's the songs that did. KC and The Sunshine Band's "That's the Way I Like It"???? Give me a break. don (trying to cover up his mistake with outrage) "It's all Folk music" -- Erin McKeown Don Semmens; Richmond, VA; donsem@concentric.net Visit my Regan Site http://www.concentric.net/~donsem/regan.htm Rob Buck Memorial Scholarship Fund http://gottabuck.org/ Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V3 #44 *********************************
