If you haven't heard Beth, find someplace to take a listen. She was part of Voices on the Verge (along with Jess Klein, Erin McKeown and Rose Polenzani), and is a very thoughtful, poetic songwriter with a soulful voice (I'd liken her to Dar Williams, just for illustrative purposes). In shows, she manages to make every member of the audience feel like it's just she and them, sitting with legs curled underneath them on a soft couch in front of a warm fire, sipping tea, chatting leisurely. She is funny, kind, warm and intelligent, and when you meet her, she greets you like you an old friend, even if you've never met before. Anyway, the point, the point. She has started working on her second album, which she is going to be putting out independently on her own label. In order to make this a reality though, she needs 200 preorders for the album, which will be released in June. Being able to be a part of something like this is so cool, but Beth sweetens the pot. Preorders will receive a hand-hewn booklet documenting the recording process and the songs, and as wonderful a songwriter as she is, Beth's prose is a work of art in itself. She writes the best e-mail announcements and updates of anyone I know. Receiving them is more like being given a short story than news...they are unhurried and silken, filled with almost palpable imagery and the characters that fill her world: her neighbors, people she has met along the way, whomever just called on the phone. This booklet is going to ROCK!! Preorders will also receive a secret website address where you can hear rough mixes of the songs prior to their release. This is such a good cause. I am SO psyched that I get to be a part of something like this....what a great honor!! I can't encourage you enough to check her out if you aren't already familiar with her, and if you do know her, add your support if you can. Information on the recording (which is being produced by Dave Chalfant, with several great guest artists) and details on preordering can be found at http://www.bethamsel.com. While there, take a look around! Thanks for letting me enthuse......
