Hey, I'm just a lurker here, but this one got my attention. I fly a lot and have to ask: What's this about a plane and a goat? Seaplanes can obviously be a bit scarier than regular planes (landing on water), which might explain the boat and the moat. But if you've had some experience that included a plane and a goat, no wonder you're afraid of flying. :) Ken "maybe I should stick to lurking" Stiffler - -----Original Message----- From: owner-jangle-poets@smoe.org [mailto:owner-jangle-poets@smoe.org]On Behalf Of rhiannon richard Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2001 8:40 PM To: jangle-poets@smoe.org Subject: Re: [jangle-poets] FearOfFlying? Cone, I'm going to fly a two seater aerobatic plane in a couple of weeks time. Upside down. My smallest commercial flight was to Santo, one of the outlying islands of Vanuatu (in Micronesia). The runways were grass and my travelling companions where chickens. Does that answer your question? Cheryl Wheeler only gigs where she can drive too. Me? I'd fly anywhere. Had heard an occasional recommendation on the NanciNet, but they were few and far apart. There are a lot of people who get more comments there, so, though I kept EFO in mind, there were a lot of other places to put my CD dollars the last few years. Then I joined jangle-poets, followed shortly by the nook and, thanks to all the effervescence here, I decided it was time to give them a try. I mean, if people who like The Kennedys AND The Nields, (with a NanciNetter or two thrown in) also like EFO, they must be pretty good. Right? Got "Actually Not" and saved it, along with a few other new CDs, for a first time listen during a cross country drive I was making in January. After starting out from Cannon Beach, Oregon listening to Kasey Chamber's "Don't Talk Back" from her "The Captain" CD - a great theme song for anyone who, like me, spends a lot of time on the road - I switched to the first new CD of the trip. With great luck, serendipity, synchronicity, or some other form of miracle, "Actually Not" happened to be the first new CD I listened to. (Couldn't have been anything so mundane as "E" for "Eddie" falling alphabetically as the first of the new CDs that I was saving for the trip, could it??? Nah.) I was immediately hooked. Listened to that CD continuously for the first several hours of the trip and at least twice on each of the six days it took me to drive south to Los Angeles, then east along Route 10 to Alabama and northward to Virginia Beach. Not to mention all the times I'd put individual songs on repeat. I don't think I've listened to "The Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown" just once at a time, yet. Caught my ear on the very first listen and won't let go. The overall sound of that song reminds me of Domestic Science Club's "The Windmill And The Wind", another song that hooked me on first listen and wouldn't let go. In an effort to return the favor, I think that a lot of people here might like Lindisfarne. A good-time band, if ever there was one. The best place to start is with their live album "Magic In The Air", if you can find it. But I've never seen it on CD. Next best choice is their very first - "Nicely Out Of Tune". Both that and their second, "Fog On The Tyne", which is almost as good, are available on CD. Hope someone here enjoys them as much as I'm enjoying Eddie From Ohio. Ken Stiffler Who has yet to see The Kennedys, The Nields and now EFO live, but really really really really wants to and who will always think of the coast of Oregon in the rain when listening to EFO. I'm listening to ROFS for the first time (and loving it). I'm thrilled that they wrote some of these tunes on some of the places that I know and love. I laughed out loud at the lyrics and subsequent explanation of Chelsea Embankment. It's just places names! As a song it's grand, but I wonder what impression it gives if you don't know the places. There's sucha strange mix. Holland Park is beautiful in autumn - lots of squirrels and coloured leaves. Kensington High St (Ken High) is close by - I used to work not for from there and take my lunch on Ken High. Portobello Rd (the Belly) is where all the antique shops are - an eclectic place. The King's Rd (always known as "the" King's Rd for whatever reason) is where Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood had their first shop - S_x - in the 60's. Just thought I'd share, DjP PS Shiela, is there a filter on this list such that posts with words like s_x in them will get trashed? NP Wall of Death - preferring it to Nanci's version which is a BIG call for me!
