I left Richmond at 5pm making great time until I hit the outer beltway. Then 4 lanes of bumper-to-bumper traffic. Not to worry though. I play "Common Bond" and instantly relax. We all do share a common bond on this crowded highway. I finally find O'Briens Pit Barbecue (when I'm on my way to a show I never hesitate to ask directions) and find a seat right up front. As Cone said "this is not a great place for vegetarian musicians." I get a fairly decent (although expensive) chicken filet sandwich and wait for the show. Jess Klein opened with a 1/2 hour set. I think everyone knows how much I love her music and voice and she did not disappoint. I had just seen her at Iota in Arlington which is a larger venue, but her energy was excellent in both places. During one of her songs, she breaks a string a Maura comes to the rescue with one of her guitars AND she re strings Jess' guitar during the next song. Then The Kennedys come out. Here's the setlist (? indicates not 100% sure of the title): Life Is Large (this opening song has the same effect on me when I first heard it 1-1/2 years ago. WOW! Great way to start a show!) The Coo Coo (with Pete teasing a bit of "My Favorite Things" from Sound of Music) You Can't Kill Hope With A Gun (Pete and Maura have a brilliant idea of blasting this song 24x7 at the NRA headquarters in Fairfax County ala Manuel Noriega) Down Down Down (Pete's beautiful opening solo and then Maura's haunting voice. Incredible!) Wall of Death (yay!) Distant Thunder (?) Running Red Lights (?) River of Fallen Stars Happy Birthday to Maura (they bring out a cake with candles which is shared with the audience) BREAK (Cone and I retire to the parking lot to settle our "differences" regarding Jess Klein. Don't worry, it was very friendly. Cone knows he's wrong. :-) The "all request" 2nd set: Bend in the River (Maura's request) Common Bond (my request) Fortune Teller Road Orange Blossom Special Take a Message to Mary (?) Pearl's Eye View (this is a brand-spankin'-new song just finished that day. It's a wonderful song about a woman photographer/journalist (I can't remember if Maura mentioned her name) who was on the front lines between WW II and Vietnam. This song was so new that I got to play "music stand" so Maura could look at the lyrics. It's a fairly uptempo song which made it difficult for me to hold the paper straight. :-) ) Because --> Strawberry Fields ("Living is easy with nice clothes." haha) Rappahannock Jesse (Maura breaks a string!) --> Eight Miles High Life is Large ENCORE A very special "For What It's Worth." Jess Klein and guitarist Austin Nevins join The Kennedys for this great song. Austin and Pete trade guitar licks while Jess adds her special voice. Well, have to get ready for work (sigh. I wish my work was following bands around). :-) don What we do in love and kindness Is all we ever leave behind -- Carrie Newcomer, "Bare To The Bone" Don Semmens; Richmond VA; donsem@concentric.net Visit my Regan Site http://www.concentric.net/~donsem/regan.htm Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Oct 2000 13:47:20 EDT From: Fantine729@aol.com Subject: Re: [jangle-poets] Kennedys at O'Briens 10/25/00 (bday show) You've made my day, Don!! Detoxing from my Kennedys weekend has proven to be most perilous (sure, my doctor SAYS it's bronchitis ["I don't care HOW great the weekend was...your lungs are NOT protesting the dearth of live music in your every day life" she says] but *I* know it's withdrawal :-) and I NEEDED a concert review like that. I envy you for that wonderful double bill; I've only seen Jess at the New Bedford and Newport folk festivals, but think she is amazing, and I really need to hunt down a show of hers (she only lives in the next town over, too...almost my neighbor)! I'm glad you had a wonderful time and thanks for coming back and sharing it!! I also thank everyone for the really nice things you've said about me in your posts....it really lifted my spirits, even as my body is revolting. This list is the coolest thing I've ever been a part of, and it's all because of everyone who is here!! Nine more days and it's my turn to see them again (assuming I live :-)!! YAY!
