I grew up in a college town (NewArk, DE) & the Cradle is about what I Xpect 2 find located near most college campuses. The staff is relaxed... plenty of dance floor... big sound system... This is what I think of when Gram Parsons sings 'a good saloon in every town'. I've never had a problem w/ the Cradle. It's not often I get 2 urinate in2 a trough, which as I see it, is the only real down side 2 the Cradle. Traxx, in Charlottesville, VA, on the other hand, while similiar in appearence, is a good Xample of what happens when the staff takes themselves 2 seriously. They make the minor thing an issue... there's no re-entry & no smoking, which is kind of a double whammy 4 smokers. I don't think the men's room has ever been scrubed down properly. Not Xactly what I want 2 find after a 5 hour drive & several cups of coffee. But the thing I detest the most in a venue is being herded out of the place as soon as the show is over. If the staff is in such a hurry 2 go home, mayB they're in the wrong buisness. As is the case w/ a lot of clubs, Traxx treat the artists very well but don't seem 2 have much respect 4 their patrons. I think they Xpect a crowd of drunken troublemakers & don't quite know how 2 handle a well behaved crowd. This is very often the case w/ places that serve alcohol. They begin 2 treat everybody like a bunch of drunks, whether U drink or not, & if U don't drink they give U the hairy eyeball. It's a no win situation. The really good venue in Charlottesville is the Prism Coffeehouse. There's even a motel discount 4 folks who travel 2 their shows. I wish HaHaHa would play the Prism. I gave the NiELdS all the info, but 4 some reason they insist on booking the 'clubs'... The cradle is very lenient about it, but some place aren't. I ALWAYS get hungry halfway through a show, and I like to run out to the car to grab a bite to eat between sets. Now, if venues sold more than chips I wouldn't have this problem as I could buy it inside. But most venues don't sell much food, so I either have to bring it in with me (which is a pain in the ass) or go back out to the car and get it. And re-entry is definitely good for smokers... and for nonsmokers. People are a lot less likely to break the rules and smoke if they can go outside to do it. And i personally have asthma, and there is nothing worse than standing next to a smoker! >I don't think the men's >room has ever been scrubed down properly. Can we say "THE BIRCHMERE"? All artists LOVE it, and think it's a great place to play. Robbie Shaeffer told me that it was mostly because the sound is great in there. But I hate feeling like big brother is watching me. And also being forced to buy their awful and expensive food or starve. > They begin 2 treat everybody >like a bunch of drunks, whether U drink or not, & if U don't drink they give U >the hairy eyeball. Oh yeah. I get so many funny expressions when I ask for a soda (and since I can't drink caffeine anymore, things just got even more difficult...water it is). The Grey Eagle in Asheville is one of my favourite venues partly because they REALLY love what they're doing, and they have a large variety of nantucket necters and stuff like that. The cradle I love because it's stand up, the bar is in another room, there are seats for those that don't like to stand, and it has that grungy club feel that lets me know that they spend their money on the music, not on the atmosphere! So, now to bring in the rest of the list and prevent this from becoming a conversation between conehead and me... do any of the rest of you guys have a favourite venue? And why? And I'm not sure if this is proper ettiquitte of the list, but I'm going to ask pete and maura a question (you guys still around? We haven't heard from you in a while!): What is your favourite venue to play? We hear patron's complaints and raves all the time, but we rarely get to hear what an artist thinks of a club! I think this is a really interesting conversation! And why? Screw the rest of the list, Rhia. U & me, girl, all the way... We don't need no stinking lurkers. The Point in Bryn Mawr, Pa, is a very comfortable room, w/ good food, & couches... A 'Friends' kind of feel. Andy's in Chestertown, MD, is another great room. The menu is kind of slim pickins. The State Theatre, Falls Church, VA, is the best venue in the DC area... or at least it's right up there w/ the Barns of Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA, which is part of the National Center 4 the Performing Arts. O'Brien's BBQ, in Rockville, MD, has some of the best country cookin' available at a folk club. Although rather small, it's 1 of my favorite rooms that I return 2 frequently. The Wire, New Cumberland, Pa, (now defunct) was like a concert in your living room, w/ a wide selection of non-alcoholic beverages. All of these places have re-entry. Loose is where it's at 4 me. I was just talking to Robbie about it the other day. He said that basically they've never tried the Cradle because the Arts Center is where they first played, and they liked it so they stuck to it. Also, they have a lot of little kid fans, and parents like having one place where they feel REALLY comfortable taking their kids. They play Ziggy's in winston-salem, and a lot of parents don't like taking their kids there... so they like having one really theatre sit-down type venue in the "hexagon" (what you get when you combine the triangle and triad of NC). Oh, and as far as ziggy's goes, they're planning on maybe changing venues in winston-salem. I am still mad at Ziggy's for not letting the kennedys headline when the hahaha show was cancelled because nerissa was sick!!! - -rhiannon At 09:23 PM 10/10/00 EDT, you wrote: > but efo always seem to play the artscenter, anyone know >why?? > ----------------------------------------- "I'm stopping traffic, cinemagraphic With my long black coat hanging down in the dirt And my hair clinging to my face in the rain Like a goddess from the cult of beautiful pain" -dar williams ------------- http://www.unca.edu/~rcrichar/index2.htm ----------------------------------------- Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 23:31:22 EDT From: Fantine729@aol.com Subject: [jangle-poets] my venue picks (largely NE mentions) << do any of the rest of you guys have a favourite venue? And why? >> For sound, there is a UU church basement in Haverhill, MA (The New Moon Coffeehouse) which is inexplicably unbelievable. I saw Lucy Kaplansky there, and had actually seen her the previous two nights in different venues, and the sound at the New Moon was incomparable....everyone I've heard there sounds better than they've ever been. A larger venue with the best acoustics that I have ever heard (even better than Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully in NYC): Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy, NY, though I've only heard it from the stage (I've never been in the audience). I love Passim in Harvard Square. They are very relaxed and laid back. While they do have tables and serve (mediocre) food, they have no problem with my bringing in takeout from elsewhere, and even ask if I need silverware!! They're also great about reentry (which, as I have trouble sitting still and tend to get there really early, is most helpful), and if you're there for back-to-back shows, while you do need to leave the room so they can clear the tables, they let you leave your stuff there to save your seat. It can be kind of crowded, as they sometimes try to put in too many tables (in my opinion), but I don't think the tables are the best seats anyway and prefer the chairs lined up against the wall (I have "my" chair right in front, stage left). The one venue to shy away from in MA -- Fox Run house concerts in Sudbury, MA. I don't care WHO'S playing, just don't go there. The hosts are unstable at best; there are five large rats -- they SAY they're dogs, but, I have a cat bigger than these things -- wandering around who sometimes are NOT very house-trained (and yet the hosts insist you leave your shoes in the foyer so YOU don't mess up their carpets, so you're stuck wandering around barefoot or in stocking feet, and have to be careful where you're stepping....helllllloooo?); the dogs wander all over the performing area and get behind the blinds in back of the performers, clacking and causing a disturbance (yet, we're instructed to leave the room if we have to so much as sneeze so we don't disturb the ambiance, but please, remember to watch where we're stepping); and the hostess carries on a running dialogue with the performer(s) as soon as they stop playing (and sometimes, even WHILE they are playing). It was the worse experience I've ever been a part of, and I even tried going back a few more times, giving them the benefit of the doubt, but invariably, things would be even more bizarre.....never again. Both performers and audience members have told me they would never go back either, which is sad, because these people somehow manage to get some really great artists (and even some repeat visits). They also lost a shoe of mine the last time I was there....apparently one of the dogs sometimes takes them ("isn't that cute?" -- the hostess). There is a lot of weirdness in my life, but this place nearly pushed me over the edge. Peace, Sheila .....in case you're wondering, we never found the shoe Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V2 #52 *********************************
