The show tonight was so very cool. It started out just being a friend and I, but then people started calling Lena's adding numbers to my reservation, so by the time I showed up, the reservation was for 10! Two actually didn't make it, but I kidnapped a fellow Nields Nooker who was sitting alone, so that was some compensation. Aside from myself, no one at my table had ever seen Pete and Maura before, so that was really exciting! As far as a set list, I kept forgetting to write stuff down, but I think this is fairly complete. They started off with Life is Large, of course!! This was followed by an instrumental the name of which I don't know. The rest went as follows: Angels Cry Robert Johnsons' Come on in My Kitchen (totally appropriate as rain was streaking the windows) Stephen's Green Fortune Teller Road Can't Kill Hope with a Gun Shearwater River of Fallen Stars - --break-- Richard Thompson's Wall of Death (or Waterbed, depending on what you hear in these sounds :-) Bells and Loaves and Letters Just Like Henry David The Everly Brothers' Wake Up Little Suzy Felice and Boudleaux Bryant's Take a Message to Mary Pick You Up Down, Down, Down Bach's Jesu instrumental Ervin Rouse's Orange Blossom Special One Heart, One Soul Sirens E = A bit of the Troggs' Wild Thing E = John Lennon's/Paul McCartney's She Loves You Wake Up Little Suzy was shouted out as a "can you do this?" from an audience member as they were introducing Take a Message to Mary (which they did a cappella) and mentioning the Everly Brothers (whom I believe covered this tune). They both kind of looked at each other and shrugged, Maura found the chords, and they gave it a whirl, pulling it off quite adroitly!! By the end of the night, John, the Nooker-adopted-Jangle-Poet-for-the-night acquired both River of Fallen Stars and Evolver, and my friend Casey bought River of Fallen Stars, so new fans were definitely made. My brother was impressed that a Johnny Cash tune (Orange Blossom) had been played and covets Pete's guitar, which looks to me like it might be a new one (or at least, I've never seen it). My brother's friend had never been subjected to folk music before, so kept saying he was in "culture shock," but everyone at my table had a great time (not that I had ANY doubt!). Rhiannon and Nell, you were alluded to as Pete and Maura mentioned that Janglers were buying fish and naming them after their songs....and that the fish was named after a song because it would be too heartbreaking to flush any named after Pete and Maura. Pete then conjectured that the potential need to flush them might have something to do with the fish being procured from Wal-Mart :-) This was a really great room in which to see these guys. I love Lena's anyway (not to mention P&M), and routinely roadtrip in from Boston because I enjoy the intimacy of the venue....but tonight was just above and beyond. I had a blast and thank Pete and Maura for EVERYTHING. So, I think I can more-or-less patiently await the E. Greenwich concert now, having finally seen Pete and Maura again!! I have a stash of tattoos, and bumper stickers for my car and my kitten's cat carrier (she's a folk kitty). Life is most DEFinitely Large! :-) Peace, Sheila Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Sep 2000 01:56:31 -0400 From: rhiannon richard Subject: Re: [jangle-poets] Lena's (longish) >Pete's guitar, which looks to me like it might be a new one (or at least, >I've never seen it). If you're talking about the orange guitar, then yes, i believe it is a new guitar. Maura mentioned it to us at the asheville show! >Rhiannon and Nell, you were alluded to as Pete and Maura mentioned that >Janglers were buying fish and naming them after their songs....and that the >fish was named after a song because it would be too heartbreaking to flush >any named after Pete and Maura. Pete then conjectured that the potential >need to flush them might have something to do with the fish being procured >from Wal-Mart :-) Now, THAT is cool! I'm so excited that they mentioned Groovy! Groovy is a very happy fish (who, actually didn't come from walmart, because we looked at the walmart fish, and like pete, realized that they'd be flushed very soon!). Groovy is very excited to be famous now. He's swimming around singing life is large. He's VERY musical, and his favourite chord is the G chord. Yay for the great review from sheila! I'm glad that you adopted John for the night. He reported back that he liked the concert very much. But then again, who wouldn't? Ohhh, and on another note (since i'm posting anyhow)... I have decided that for halloween I'm going to be a folk singer. It gives me an excuse to buy a strap for my guitar. Any suggestions on what I should wear to be a folk singer? - -rhiannon ----------------------------------------- "I'm stopping traffic, cinemagraphic With my long black coat hanging down in the dirt And my hair clinging to my face in the rain Like a goddess from the cult of beautiful pain" -dar williams ------------- http://www.unca.edu/~rcrichar/index2.htm ----------------------------------------- Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V2 #39 *********************************
