The kennedys have come through for us old-enough-to-vote-and-do-just-about-any-other-legal-activity-but-not-old-en ough-to-get-into-a-club kids! I'm SO super-excited! We've called our friends that were going, and hopefully they'll get back to us soon (so the list will be emailed in the next couple of hours, i hope)! Also, I think that the kennedys being involved in this list is one of the neatest things that I've ever seen on the internet. I still feel free to write whatever I want, and yet I know that any suggestions and questions will be heard first hand! I would also like to say THANK YOU to sheila, for going through the trouble of calling the club and pleading on our behalf, and then emailing every mailing list she's on to find us gaurdians! I hope you have a GREAT time at the cafe lena show! - -rhiannon ----------------------------------------- "I'm stopping traffic, cinemagraphic With my long black coat hanging down in the dirt And my hair clinging to my face in the rain Like a goddess from the cult of beautiful pain" -dar williams ------------- http://www.unca.edu/~rcrichar/index2.htm ----------------------------------------- Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Sep 2000 02:03:56 -0400 From: rhiannon richard Subject: [jangle-poets] can't kill hope with an age limit (long) Tonight the Kennedys became surrigate parents to a handful of 18-20 year olds. At about 8:45 we all went and piled into the cars (yes, we actually had TWO cars full!). After searching for a place to park, and having our other driver hit a parked car (no damage done, but it was scary!), we finally made it to Jack of the Wood. They wrote "minor" on our hands, to ensure that we WEREN'T going to drink (duh, we could've told them that!). We went inside and found a few seats around a table, waiting for the show to start. Soon Pete and Maura came in the door, and immediately recognized the group of teenagers sitting together. We gave them a bunch of wild flowers that anelle had identified with her handy dandy plant identification book. We talked for a while about the club and and age limits. Maura had to sign her life away to the club promising that we wouldn't drink alcohol while we were there. I was completely impressed that she was willing to take such a risk on us! It turned out that the kennedys would be playing three short sets that night. We went and took seats on the floor (best seats in the house). They opened and closed the first one with "life is large". I'd give a whole set list, but I forgot my pen (i also forgot my camera!!! oh no!). I know that they played several off of each album as well as a whole plethora of cover songs. My request was "just like henry david" which they played, saying from the stage that it was requested by their "good friend rhiannon" (and i am holding to the fact that there is NOTHING like having your name said from stage by one of your favourite bands). Off the top of my head, I also remember them playing "pick you up", "can't kill hope with a gun", "here without you", "jesse", "st. mark's square", "sirens", "one heart one soul", "river of fallen stars", "sin city", "eight miles high", "mr. tambourine man"...and many more. Pete introduced "can't kill hope as a gun" as "can't kill hope with an age limit" before telling the true title!!! That was very exciting. And during "Sin City" the line about "show your i.d. at the door" (or whatever the line is), we all grinned at each other. Between the first and second set we got stickers, tattoos, and CDs (yes katie, i got you a sticker and a tattoo). nell and I went to the bathroom and put our tattoos on...unfortunately pete's feet got cut off of mine. nell found a sticker stuck to a table, and put it on her shirt, so when her long sleeved shirt was off, she was sporting the tattoo, and when it was on, she was sporting a kennedys sticker. Between the second and third set I got to talk to Maura about guitar stuff for a while. That was SO great. I've never gotten to REALLY discuss guitars with a professional musician. She taught me kennedys' tricks-of-the-trade for avoiding barre chords. I also discovered that she uses the same kind of capo as I do (and as anelle does)! After the show we talked about various venues and concerts and bands and falcon ridge and other cool musical stuff. Pete and Maura both told me that had I ended up sitting on the sidewalk unable to get in that they were going to go out and play on the sidewalk for me either before or after the show! Now, THAT is thoughtful! The flowers that we gave them opened up during the show... they have wonderful taste in music. The audience got louder as the show went on. During the first set the audience was very quiet and listening well. By the third set they were all fairly loud, but i've seen much much worse. One of the waitresses waltzed during "sin city" and was dubbed the "waltzing waitress". I am still on that great "concert high" that is unavoidable after a night as great as tonight. All my friends were laughing at me before the show and at the end of the first set, because I was extremely silly and giddy. The kennedys reminded me of exactly WHY music will be my life, career, and love forever. I want to thank pete and maura yet again for playing mommy and daddy to us for the evening, and for a WONDERFUL show. And I want to thank sheila again for all the trouble she went through trying to ensure that I would definitely get in to see the show. Now, seeing as how I may be under 21, but i am most definitely NOT a minor... I'm going to wash the words off my hands now. Thanks. If i think of anything that i missed, i'll mail you lovely people tomorrow!
