They did a great cover of this old Beatles tune as the B-side to their promo CD single "Velvet Glove". I searched a long time before finding a copy, and during an e-mail exchange, learned that even Pete and Maura didn't own one. So I searched more and came up with a second one, which I gave them after their show at The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago a couple of months ago. My truly favorite song is Spirit Compass, and I was thrilled that they played it as a request when I saw them last fall in Lansing. In fact, they said it was the first time they'd ever performed it live. Then they did it as a reprise to close the show, like they usually do with Life Is Large. One of the highlights of my concert-going life! If you're reading, P & M, thanks again! But in the 1-1/2 years I've been listening to them, I find myself pulling out "River of Fallen Stars" more often. A beautiful recording. So, my favorite song happens to be off that CD. It's a cover too. Richard Thompson's "Wall of Death (or 'Waterbed" as they once called it) is a great song and Pete and Maura do it justice by adding a happy pop feel to it. There's a slew of other songs including "Life is Large," "Never Learn," "Angel Fire," "Day in and Day Out," River of Fallen Stars," etc. (ok, they haven't done a song called "etc.") don (who just had to verify for himself that it's only been since Jan 1999. It seems I've been listening to them forever. :-) ) NP: Carrie Newcomer's new cd, "The Age of Possibility" D'argo: "Well now I can only speak truth. And that comes as good and bad news."
