I also lurk on the Nields and EFO lists. I got turned onto the Kennedy's by a friend in the radio business in the Annapolis area who was friends with them. I got hooked the first time I popped Life Is Large into the CD player. Seeing them live for the first time though at the Ram's Head blew me away even more. Its really great to hear music that can pay homage to heroes of the past and still stay fresh and contemporary. So many bands either leave their roots behind them in search of the almighty buck or become trapped in tradition and never break free. Pete and Maura walk that line expertly. One of the most enjoyable evenings I've ever spent was when my friend Jon called me to say he was having a party at his house and was having Pete and Maura come over to play! He called it a "Hootenany". They came and chatted and then started taking requests for covers. They played for hours covering Beatles, Byrds, CSN, Dylan...anything people shouted out. It was hysterical to watch as they shot each other looks, straining to remember the second verse of a song or the chords in a bridge of another. But their musical knowledge is truly awesome. If any of you have ever spent the evening around the campfire at a folk festival with a guitar player and alot of out of tunes voices, you know how much fun these sing-alongs can be. It was impressive though to be led through it all by two such talents. The HA HA HA tour this year was alot of fun. I have seen the Neilds/Kennedys play together several times, and its a show I'd never miss. I guess we are lucky being in the Mid-Atlantic area (Philadelphia) where not only do we get alot of shows locally, but jaunts up to the NYC or down to the DC area are easy to plan. One idea that came to me after seeing several of the shows (and watching some tapers) was that this would be a great live album. I know that neither the Nields nor Pete and Maura have ever done one. Both bands seemed to get inspired by the other. A few Nields songs, a few Kennedys tunes and then a combined finale. Are you listening Rounder? I think the problem Charlotte noted earlier with the Reply-To feature has been fixed....if not, let me know. Welcome also to Chuck and Frank, and to the others who haven't introduced themselves yet! I loved your house concert/party story, Chuck. That must have been SO much fun!! I'm still relatively new to local music as a whole, and I've never attended a house concert yet (though have a ticket for one in September to see Jennifer Kimball). I also liked what you said about Pete and Maura paying homage to those who came before them while making their own sound....when I first heard Beethoven's 9th in the middle of Life is Large, I thought it was sheer genius (I'm a classical oboist, and probably found it especially novel as a result)...I later found out it was done before by the Byrds (though that makes it no less cool)! So, I am starting to learn about Pete and Maura's influences (the "heroes of the past"), and it's a great journey!! Though I don't think it's necessary background for appreciating their music, it does add some richness to the experience. As always, chime in if you feel like it, and let me know if there's anything that needs my attention. I noticed the message to join this list while checking out my Nook mail yesterday, where I am mostly a lurker. I was turned on to The Kennedy's when my brother had them play for his wedding reception at the old Fort Mifflin in Philly a few years ago and have been a fan ever since. Since then I have seen them play here in Rochester, NY a couple times. We have all the Kennedy's cd's and a couple of Pete's solo efforts...love em all!! Looking forward to an even more clogged email inbox!! My name is katie and I'm sort of a new Kennedys fan. I got into them because of Rhiannon. She said they were good. Everyone she likes, I end up liking, so as a present to myself for doing something school-related (and because it was on sale) I got _Evolver_ at the end of last semester and fell in love with it. As for live shows, I was hoping to see them tomorrow night in San Francisco since they are only playing 2 shows in Northern California but alas, the stupid club is 21+ and I don't turn 21 until December. Regarding me, I'm going into my senior year at San Francisco State majoring in all things audio and radio. I spend most of my free time annoying people at KRCB-FM, a public radio station in Rohnert park where I do engineering and protools stuff. It's fun really, I just mastered two different compilation CDs. fun stuff, katie http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~stohlman/ check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.kennedysmusic.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Aug 2000 20:04:11 -0400 From: Don Semmens Subject: Re: Welcome to jangle-poets Hi everyone: I also came to the Kennedys via The Nields (and I'm also a big EFO fan. Rhiannon STOP following me! :) ). I'll never forget my first Kennedys experience and not because my truck broke down on the way home the next morning. :-) It was the Ramshead show in Annapolis in January 1999 with The Nields. Pete and Maura just wowed me, especially Pete's guitar playing. Since then I've taken many trips up to Northern Virginia to see this duo. One of my favorites was on my birthday last year when they played a house concert in Great Falls, VA. It's hard to choose which I like better. The intimate settings are special, but seeing a full band show is exhilarating. (I'll let Katie explain these, as I'm still not entirely sure what they are myself....I only know that Katie delivers them). I'm really sorry you can't go...they really put on an amazing show, though I've yet to see a full one (only openers and festivals thus far....I'm eagerly awaiting their September show at Caffe Lena's in Saratoga Springs, NY). River of Fallen Stars was my last acquisition in terms of their work (I need to get Pete's solo stuff now)...I picked it up at New Bedford and listened to it for the next week while I was vacationing on the Cape. For anyone who might not know this first album, the title song (River...) is where I got the idea for the name of the list (there are poems in the seaweed/down by the snowcross/northern and mossy, they will echo off a star/and the jangle poets/will sing their songs/while the pilgrim travellers will listen from afar.....). It's a very pretty album. I'm hard pressed to finger a favorite song (or album)...I listened to Life is Large (just the one song, not the entire album :-) on repeat nonstop from the Birchmere outside of DC (where I bought it) until New Jersey (though I stopped for the night somewhere in Maryland). It's become one of many guideposts in my existence. There are SO many wonderful others, though....Strangers (I'm a recent X-File convert), Can't Kill Hope, Tribe....there's a lot of good stuff to choose from!
