We'd like to thanks Sheila Turner for approaching us and offering her time and talent in putting this list together and maintaining it. We'd also like to thank Jeff Wasilko at smoe who was kind enough to host the list on his site. We welcome everyone and encourage questions and discussions regaring our CDs, live shows, videos, tour schedule, collaborations with other artists, songwriting, or fashion sensibilities (-: We'll participate as well, as time allows, and look forward to these discussions! Peace & Love Pete & Maura The Kennedys ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Aug 2000 20:18:36 EDT From: Fantine729@aol.com Subject: Welcome I know for a fact that there are now a few people on this list, and I decided that I would break the ice. I don't know if anyone was signed up early enough to receive it, but there was a lovely note from Pete and Maura which was sent to the list....it should be in the archives come tomorrow, if you're interested in taking a look. My name is Sheila, and I'm so glad you all decided to join up....I'm also thrilled to see some familiar names from the Nields Nook and the Lucy (Kaplansky) List. I'm so psyched to be a part of this. I will confess, however, to having an ulterior motive in setting this up....living in Boston, I definitely can't complain about the local music scene and can see many of my favs frequently. But I don't get to see the Kennedys as often as I would like...it seems to be about every two months at most. So, I was hoping to be able to vicariously tour by getting people to send in concert reviews to the list :-) Along those lines...has anyone been able to catch them on their current tour? They're in CA right now, and I won't be able to see them until September.... As for my personal Kennedys history, up until a little over two months ago, if someone had mentioned Pete and Maura Kennedy to me, I probably would have asked what they were running for and in what district (I told you, I live in Boston!). I first saw them at Karma when they opened a six-week tour with the Nields and was INstantly hooked. I melted when I heard You Can't Kill Hope With A Gun, and soared when they played Life is Large. The whole show was just way too much fun!! (I also loved Maura's watch, which is way cool). I then decided to take a road trip to DC for my birthday at the beginning of June to catch their final show opening for the Nields, and despite losing two tires and being temporarily stranded in the vast wasteland that constitutes much of the NJ Turnpike (with the threat of not being able to make it to DC at all), I ended up running in just in time to catch Pete and Maura's last few numbers. Fortunately, they joined the Nields for much of the their act, so I didn't miss too much!! After that, I went looking for a discussion list, but couldn't find one. The rest, as they say, is pretty much history. Though I've never started something like this before in my life, it was something I really wanted to do, and after seeing them in New Bedford, I decided to actively pursue it. I'm looking forward to getting to know people as they de-lurk to introduce themselves. I hope everyone finds this a pleasant place to hang....if there are any problems or complaints or if you have any suggestions, ideas, etc., please feel free to e-mail me (JanglePoets@aol.com) or just bring them up yourselves. This list belongs to all of us and will be what we collectively make of it. I hope everyone contributes in whatever way they feel comfortable!! Again, welcome everyone!! Please do introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about you!! I'm sure there must be a mailing list but i don't know?! so i was overly excited when hearing of a LIST starting for such an awesome duo and knew i had to get in on it!! so thanks and i am looking forward to hearing everyone else!! thanks charlotte ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Aug 2000 22:47:30 EDT From: JanglePoets@aol.com Subject: Welcome and our first bug Thanks for posting Charlotte, if only so I can know it's working!! I believe you can find info on merchandise at the Kennedys' website www.kennedysmusic.com. The few times I find myself in chain record store I take an informal survey of what they have and for who, and I can usually find Evolver. River of Fallen Stars and Life is Large are only available through the Kennedys. You can sometimes find Angel Fire out there too, but I encourage people to buy from the artists when at all possible....THEY need the money more than HMV or Tower Records do. I also thank Charlotte for pointing out that when you hit Reply to answer a post, the author's name crops up in the Send To box, instead of the list's address. I'm leafing through my 20-some-odd page owner's manual and will get this fixed. In the meantime, just try to remember to change the address! Peace, Sheila ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Aug 2000 23:52:16 EDT From: HarchOhio@aol.com Subject: Greetings! Congrats to Sheila, and of course, Pete and Maura, for launching this e-mail list. It should be a lot of fun. I've been a pretty enthusiastic fan of The Kennedys since I saw a flyer promoting a concert (which I had missed by a day or so) back when they released River of Fallen Stars, in 1995, I guess. I tracked that CD down, bought it blind based on the description of their "Byrds-like jangle", and was captivated from the opening notes. Subsequent CDs have been "day of release" acquisitions for me, and have never disappointed! I've seen them three times as a duo (Delaware, OH; Lansing, MI; and a couple of months ago at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music! (What a venue! ) and once with their Evolver-tour band in Cincinnati. And I'm looking forward to their September appearance in Columbus, Ohio, where I live. Hope to read lots of e-mail from other fans. And hope to meet some of you, too, at future shows! Life IS Large! I'm rhiannon and I'm a frequent poster on the nields nook, as well as a lurker on the EFO and Dar lists. Since we're discussing how we found the kennedys, I'll jump in. The nields mentioned the kennedys on one of their newsletters. And since i like the nields so much, I decided to check out the kennedys' webpage. Then I got a copy of "angelfire" in Chapel Hill, NC (charlotte: i bought it at record exchange, you might want to check there as well as schoolkids). Then I bought evolver when that came out. In March Pete and Maura came to Asheville (where i go to school), and I got to see them. I also got to meet them, and they were VERY nice. Then in may/june the HaHaHa tour (nields/kennedys) came through NC. We drove the 4 hours to winston-salem, only for the show to be cancelled. But two nights later we saw the AWESOME cat's cradle show. And two nights after THAT, we saw the EVEN BETTER birchmere show. We got to talk to Pete and Maura again, and they were still extremely nice. And now it looks like they're going to make it back to asheville sometime soon...and this time I'll try to get more people to come. And that's the history of rhiannon and the kennedys. Oh, and me? I'm a 19 year old undeclared literature major sophmore at UNC-asheville who just bought a guitar and is trying to learn how to play it (i'm so thrilled with it that I have to tell everyone!).
