A couple of ILx notes: For those who might not be aware, there are two major music sales web sites that are free of charge to use. The first is Music Stack , written and run by David Stack . It allows you to send single entries by hand and forces you to renew them once every 30 days via an email notice. There is no bulk entry right now as David wishes to keep it non-commercial, but I have spoken to him about it and there is talk of adding it in some limited way. The second is GEMM that is a large eBay-like site. It allows you to send single entries or large bulk files. They're both well done. I support David's because it's independent and I like that stale entries are removed every 30 days. GEMM suffers from many commercial vendors who just post large distribution catalogs which are identical to many others, and from a large number of out-of-date entries because there is no expiration. The bulk upload that allows you to send big lists is the major difference between the two, but it usually takes GEMM 2-4 weeks to get around to uploading new versions, and they "correct" many entries that results in screwing them up, for example: two word band names get transformed as a person's name, e.g. "Blossoms, Gin" and "Femmes, Violent". Both are planning on adding auction features in the future, without the short-term durations eBay uses. I use both but would especially like to encourage ILxers to try out Music Stack! =========================================================================== There will be no ILx posting 11/29/98 in remembrance for slain turkeys. =========================================================================== Having been barraged by pledge drives on my two favorite radio stations, I am reminded it's time again to ask subscribers to pass along info of the ILx to others. We've been stable at around 170 members with the incoming trickle barely keeping up with the removed invalid addresses. Below is an info blurb, please feel free to email it to friends, record-trading aliases, mailing lists, etc. Increasing the number of subscribers benefits everyone on the list! Sorry, but your assistance is not tax-deductable. ;) Thanks! Wink What is the Indie-List eXchange? -------------------------------- The ILx (Indie-List eXchange) is a mailing list used as a forum to promote the exchange of indie music. This encompasses sales and trades of indie CDs, vinyl, and cassettes between individuals. Commercial interests are discouraged. Both "For Sale" and "Wanted" posts are welcome. Mailings will go out once every Sunday contingent on the amount of traffic. Each issue will be a list of items offered for sale or wanted along with the name and e-mail address of the person to contact. All business should be done privately; the sole purpose of the list to to inform you who to contact. How Do I Subscribe/Unsubscribe? ------------------------------- ILX, the Indie-List eXchange, is running on a majordomo, and has an open subscription policy (for now.) To subscribe, send in the *body* of a message, *not* the subject: subscribe ilx to "majordomo@smoe.org". You will receive a confirmation message. Send it back to the majordomo, then you'll be subscribed, and you'll get a copy of the welcome message. To unsubscribe, follow the same procedure but use "unsubscribe" instead of "subscribe" in the message. Administrative comments and questions should be sent to "owner-ilx@smoe.org". What can I trade? ----------------- The definition of "indie" is vague; think small labels & non-mainstream, use your best judgement. Pirated copies are not allowed, tapes or otherwise. Feel free to send want lists as well as sale/trades lists to me at "owner-ilx@smoe.org". Messages are collected and sent out once a week, usually on Sundays. Please be sure to reply to the address of the person who sent the message if you're interested in something, not to the list. Also, please send info about decent sources related to the ILx on the Net. For example, I wanted to mention that Lazlo Nibble's amazing Internet Want Lists are still available and going strong at: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo/Wantlists/ Reminder: no posting over 11/27 weekend due to preordained need for tryptophan detox. =========================================================================== Reply-To: winkjr@teleport.com Last updated 11/1/98.
