The first event, featuring Earth and Pillar Point was held at Barboza's - which is the basement bar of Neumos, here in Seattle. It's a tiny space, very intimate. I arrived just after the doors opened at 8:00 PM and noticed the sign on the wall. Wire - unannounced (kinda) - was up first at 9:00 PM. I knew from their website that they would be opening one of the gigs - turns out it was this one. They took the stage at 9:00 PM and kicked off with 12XU, which, afterwards, they jokingly said was one of their new ones. I wasn't obsessively scribbling notes about setlists like I do at some shows, but I know that Advantage In Height followed, then other songs included 23 Years Too Late, Two People In A Room, I Don't Understand, and the set closer Boiling Boy. The sound was a bit muddled - I think Wire simply overpowered the vocal amp of the club - but it didn't matter. Wire definitely kicked off the festival in high style. I caught some of the 2nd act - Pillar Point - but the need for food won out, so I grabbed a bite to eat upstairs, then headed back down for Earth. They're an Olympia band - same scene as the Melvins and Nirvana. Very Northwest kind of sound - kind of like an instrumental cover of a Black Sabbath song played by Neil Young on a 45 RPM single slowed down to 33. Earth finished at midnight, and Wire joined them for an epic version of Drill. Three guitarists - Matt, Colin & Dylan from Earth. Two bassists, and Robert on Kick Drum and Hi-hat. Earth's drummer was on beer bottle - which broke during the song. I'm glad I had earplugs - even with them in it felt massive. Then - it was over - and the festival was started. Coming up tonight - Helmet at the Crocodile Cafi. Cheers, Paul ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V13 #200 ********************************
