That being said, I agree with the assertion that NYC Ghosts & Flowers is a rather harshly underrated LP. I'd say that my personal favourite Sonic Youth albums (following the list's criterion) are probably Bad Moon Rising, Daydream Nation, Washing Machine, A Thousand Leaves and Sonic Nurse, in no particular order. For a group that's cited as being so avant-garde, I find them pretty conventional - an American garage rock band with extra musique concrete on top. An American Jesus & Mary Chain, perhaps? Seen them twice, 17 years apart - in 1985 at the ICA, and at Shepherds Bush Empire in 2002. And they were pretty much the same both times. They're a lot more conservative than you'd think. Having said that, when they're good, they're really good. Though the best SY album would probably be a really well-edited Greatest Hits. Probably my favourite consistent listen is Murray Street - put that down to Jim O'Rourke, who produced and played on it, and gave some real structure to a band whose albums are often something of a mess. JOR was on fire around that time - his own solo album Insignificance is a cracker, and his work with Wilco made that band a lot more interesting for a couple of albums.
