I have seen Jawbox probably 3 different times around 1990 or so, always a good gig. I just never expected to hear their name ever again. So thanks for bringing that up! I never bought anything after Grippe and Novelty so I haven't a clue how good they are these days. One of the better versions of "Something Must Break" came from Jawbox. Come to think of it, can't think of another artist doing that one at all. late Paul (ye 154) _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail: Trusted email with powerful SPAM protection. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/201469227/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Mar 2010 00:21:38 -0800 From: "Paul Pietromonaco" Subject: Re: RE:[idealcopy] Jawbox live on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon - 8-Nov-09 ["Paul] >I realize this post was months ago but sometimes that's how long it takes >me > to catch up. (Well - me anyway) They really hit their stride with their first major label album for Atlantic - "For Your Own Special Sweetheart". The main problem with it was a slightly tinny sound - but the songs and performances were top notch. Unfortunately, their next album - simply titled "Jawbox" - was their swan-song, and they broke up in 1997. One more release - an odds & sods collection called "My Scrapbook Of Fatal Accidents" was released after that. (Highly recommended, BTW). Luckily, the band has control over their back catalog, and, with the help of Dischord records, got Bob Weston (Shellac) to re-mix & re-master it For Your Own Special Sweetheart, and then re-released it with the accompanying b-sides last year. That's why they played the one Fallon show - to commemorate the re-release. This is pretty essential, IMHO. Unfortunately, NBC has already pulled the clips from the show, but I do have a TiVo copy of it. When I get time, I'll extract the performance out of it. As far as reforming the band - that probably won't happen. J. Robbins formed a band post-Jawbox - unfortunately titled "Burning Airlines" - that released two very good albums (Mission: Control & Identikit), then they called it a day, too. Soon afterwards, his son Callum was born with an incurable disease - spinal muscular atrophy - and he's dedicated his life to spending as much time with Callum as possible. The prognosis isn't good - but Callum is hanging in there. You can read more about this here: http://callumrobbins.blogspot.com/2007/01/122006.html BTW - that's why he was wearing that t-shirt in the Fallon clip. > One of the better versions of > "Something Must Break" came from Jawbox. Plus - a fairly accurate rendition of The Cure's Meathook. ^_^ Cheers, Paul ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V12 #28 *******************************
