This was a huge event since it way Lydon's first appearance here since the last Sex Pistols show over three years earlier, and his notoriety had only grown. Most of the audience was ready to punk out like it was 1977. It was a great show, musically and as an event. My friend even had a sexual encounter while watching the band; the place was packed. At first we didn't know if Flipper was the best band we'd ever seen or the worst; by the end of their set we decided we liked them. When I saw them recently the band was 3/4 the same as the one we saw open for PIL, and very good, a matured band, which seems odd to me since they'd seemed like such a piss take. I would say that the two PIL shows I saw later in the 80s were not nearly so successful, I had the impression of not very much being puffed up. I wouldn't come out now. My PIL show was here in Southern California in Pasadena. Made to wait about an hour outside before the show. The crowd got rowdy, the police showed up and decided a good macing was in order. Well, mace will take you down from your pot high; however, when mixed with alcohol, the results are, ahem, riotous. Another hour later we were in: surly, drunk, angry (gee, I get the picture - thanks!). Johnny pulled a Miles Davis and played the whole show with his back to us. One happier-than-the-rest-of-us fellow took the obligatory swan dive from the top of the amps and opened up his face on the floor ( I've hired an idiot to flood a canvas in a riot of red). We boogalooed around in his liquid offering and after the show Johnny proclaimed it the worst night of his life. Other than that, it was effin great!
