Yoko is right, what every child really needs is a laptop. I presume the idea is if a child is starving to death then can use this to order some food & water from Tesco Online and get it delivered to Africa or wherever. Cool. And they can get on Facebook and play Scrabulous while they wait for the Tesco van to arrive. Following this logic, any expense educating children should be deferred until all children are clothed and fed. There are no other valid charitable causes, right? Incredible as it might seem, there are actually valid applications for computers other than those which atre named below. If you were to take a few minutes out from those valued activities to actually read about the OLPC, you might have a more valid ground for criticism. Or maybe not. It's very easy to be cynical about this sort of thing, especially when technology is so ubiquitous and in this iPhone, iPod and Mac styled world, this technology seems like luxury. I think about what having the present day internet drop into my lap would have done for me in the 70s and 80s (the technological reality these kids live in at best) and how much more the world would seem to be able to offer, the knowledge, experiences and connections that can be made. We are just too complacent with the power available to us.
