Our long national nightmare is over, or will be soon, and a dark cloud is lifted from our skies and my heart. Who knows what the future will bring? I will be satisfied with universal health care, civil rights (gay marriage, etc), and an end to an unconscionable war in Iraq. Once the atmosphere of hate and self-righteous, arrogant bigotry (both within: racism, and without; xenophobia) recedes, the important work can get done. For the first time this millennium I recognize the country I live in. Nothing is perfect, but this is a fuck of a lot better, and I, too shed a tear seeing the relief, hope, and joy on so many faces... t ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Nov 2008 03:09:14 -0800 (PST) From: Ari Subject: [idealcopy] a phuk of a lot >> Nothing is perfect, but this is a fuck of a lot better, and I, too shed a tear seeing the relief, hope, and joy on so many faces...<< Me too, my fear is that folk will expect him to deliver too much too quickly, and that the hate-mongers won't shut the fuck up, sit down and give him a chance, Riley has already declared open war on Obama, with shits like him around it won't be easy. I think this may be only the second time since I reached voting age that I voted FOR someone instead of against someone else. And if it's any condolence, Bush, Cheney and their ilk were as damaging to most of America as they were to the rest of the world. I have my fingers crossed that things go as well as it feels like they might! :) RJH PS - And on a music-related note (I apologize for the music reference) looking forward to seeing Robyn Hitchcock next week in SF! Apparently he's performing "I Often Dream of Trains..." but I have my fingers crossed that he'll do "Perspex Island" just so I can say I saw two bands mention perspex in a month! This thrilling song-cycle will be set and designed for the Barbican Theatre stage, with music performed by a 42 piece string orchestra playing alongside Walkerbs band. The only thing keeping my glee somewhat down right now is the incredible shock I've received at work. I'm having a really hard time believing how many of my co-workers are "scared"! I mean, they're not just disappointed with the results cuz their guy didn't win, but their extreme prejudice is surfacing as I listen to some of these people. Worst part is 1) I'm in NY (not NYC, but still, this place is about as ethnically diverse as places get), and 2) I'm a teacher. It's so sad to see prejudice driving decision making, even on issues that are common sense. My hope is that Obama being president really will unite our country, and that unity will continue to spread across the globe. The bad news is that it isn't so obvious to everyone. I had my own epiphany several years ago when Harold Washington was elected Mayor here in Chicago. Coming from the disaster that was Detroit after Coleman Young, I must now confess that I was pessimistic. I was also wrong. Harold Washington was a very savvy, very practical leader, who confronted and challenged prejudice with intelligence and determination, overcoming it more often than not. Coleman Young was an opportunistic exploiter. That experience forced me to confront and reject my own bias. Obama has done the same and I expect will continue to do so. There will remain a portion of the population who will never make the transition. *They* are the shrinking minority, but they are not a trivial statistic. This is a beginning of a new phase of growth and advancement, not the end of ignorance.
