Now let's hope he'll be this interesting at the RFH gig I'm going to... Yes, there was a lot of hanging around (where I must admit I started thinking I must be mad because it was rather chilly!) as waited for Julian to make his way from his earlier Manchester appearance, but eventually he and his merry men showed up, shook our hands and said they'd be back soon with their equipment to play in front of the Jung monument. A short while later, they returned and dumped their guitar cases etc in the pub. Whilst we were waiting for the band to come out of the pub, Sqwubbsy (the very large headed man on the Peggy Suicide cover, etc) was waiting outside. "I won't fit in there" he was heard to say to Julian! Anyway, there we were, a few cold people taking photo's of a man with a very large head when a local bloke walked past, looked at us and inquired "Are you Americans?"!! Anyway, shortly afterwards they came out. Julian on acoustic bass, along with two acoustic guitarists and two blokes on brass band like bass drums. We only got one number which doesn't sound a lot after all that waiting, but by the end no-one was complaining because what we did get was a truly fab 16 minute version of Sleeping Gas, which led to Julian, er, wandering around as he sang the 'wandering around' bit, and as some small trick-or-treaters were making a little bit of a nuisance of themselves it was all a bit mental! They then returned to the Jung monument whereupon Sleeping Gas briefly merged into the altogether more obscure Mighty Carl Jung track. After some musical diversion, a touching spot of dancing and hugging with an audience member they eventually finished the set there with Julian having given his bass to old pal Yorkie in another rather touching moment. I had my camcorder with me, though TBH I only intended filming the 1st number as it's not the same as just watching is it, but I ended up filming the 'whole set' (I did just hold the camera in the air and just hoped I was filming it a couple of times!). By the end my hand was freezing which prompted one member of the band to smile and remark "now you know how we feel!" I'm glad I took it though because Julian did a lot of posing for my camera. I got an extreme close up, and I mean EXTREME close-up as he basically put his mouth over my lens which prompted him to start making some remarks about 'American dentistry!" Incidentally, I took my 10 yr old. He loved it! He was soon on the phone to his mum straight afterwards to tell her that he'd got Julian's autograph and that Julian had shaken hands with TWO TIMES! Anyway in case my enthusiasm hasn't come across strong enough I'll try and leave you in no doubt how utterly fab it was. It wasn't a gig as such but it was the best live performance I've seen this year. Nothing I've written here will come close to letting you know how bonkers and joyful all this was, but it was, in a word, IMMENSE - and it'll live with me forever!
