For a) I initially went for some Sony MDR-EX71 in-ear phones, which were a lot better than the ones that came with my Creative Ipod-alike. But I still wasn't altogether happy and ended up getting some AKG K26P portable over the ear phones, which I'm pretty happy with. The only grumble I'd have about them is that they press on the ear quite hard so that after an hour or so, your ears start to grumble. But I find them a lot better than the in-ear phones I've tried. One possibly useful thing I learned is that some over the ear phones are 'closed' and some are 'open' - the open ones let more sound spill out, and aren't therefore so good for use on trains etc unless you don't mind annoying everyone around. Then for the serious home-listening I got a pair of Sennheiser HD 265 phones - I went to a shop and tried out various ones, and ended up spending more than I'd intended because I really liked these, and a year on I'd still recommend them. > Can I be really boring and ask for some recommendations for: > > a.
