["Keith" Subject: [idealcopy] Why Don't You Give It To Me? Those of you know who know me, will know that I'm also a bit of a Julian Cope fan. Now with Julian being a bit of a 'fan' himself, he has a page on his website where he chooses an album of the month, writes about it with a typically Cope-like 'wow man' enthusiasm, and streams it for people to hear it themselves. As the soundcard on my old pc was knackered for about the last years of its tired existence, I wasn't able to listen to it and owing to Cope's love of all things heavy in recent years, I wasn't gonna put my money where my mouth was and buy 'em! But I've just checked out this months AOTM. Nathaniel Mayer Why Don't You Give It To Me? Released 2007 on Alive Records .and even though I haven't even reached the end yet, I feel moved to enthuse about it here. Apparently, NM is a 'veteran Detroit R&B star' who in MES style has enlisted some musicians at least 25 years younger than himself, and thereby (in Cope's words) 'lifted himself out of the worthy but Old Timer Chicken-in-a-Basket Soul Revue scene'. The opening title track is fab - indeed I'd ordered it off the net before it had even finished. There's something of a 60's garage-like feel with NM's souly voice over the top. Anyone who likes Can Delay 68 is surely gonna love this track (and much else here). OK, not everything is as great as that - some of the later guitar wig outs might not be to everybody's taste here! - but what the hell. That opening track is possibly the best thing I've heard in a while!
