Shame there was no Ian Dury > interview material included though. I would love to see a doc just about > him once. Has such a thing been made I wonder? > Absolutely. The BBC (I think) made a documentary when it was known he was terminally ill which had him retracing his steps from his well-to do upbringing, through his time in a home for children with disabilities, deciding to become a Cockney, studying and teaching at art school and then his subsequent singing career. It was very enjoyable and very telling as his biography and comments from cohorts since his death have revealed a nasty side and how acutely conscious he was of managing his "chirpy cockney geezer" image. The moment in the film that comes to mind was when Chaz Jankel describes his initial approach to Dury after seeing him perform. Dury's response, "Do I know you ? Well f*** off then" almost ensuring the collaboration never took place. An uncomfortable Dury then insists it dawned on him he'd been "rude" and that he sent someone out to apologise. Jankel just sits there with a "Yeah right" look. Just as well he's not too proud. Dury fans on the list may have missed the recent 30th anniversary edition of New Boots and Panties which contains a bonus DVD of the Rock Goes To College performance from around this time which, through all to brief (30 minutes), is an essential purchase for any fan. The band are on cracking form.
