A great intro for someone wanting to catch up on electronic history (not including something from OMD's first four albums or b-sides is an oversight, IMHO). The Severed Heads "Dead Eyes Opened" track is worth noting as well. It starts with a blinding trio of songs. I hadn't heard The Human League's 'Circus of Death' for too long and now can't stop playing it - simultaneously funny and creepy this is one of their finest songs. Then Tubeway Army's 'Down in the Park' which sounds better than it did at the time. And then The Knife's 'Silent Shout', the opening track from their excellent album, whose fast burbling electronica always seems to slide off my brain in a faintly disturbing way, as if I've just missed it. So a fine opening and there is stuff from Matthew Dear, cLOUDDEAD, and John Foxx that's worth hearing as well as a welcome extract from Tangerine Dream's 'Rubycon'. Recommended if you can still get hold of it (or can get hold of it at all - these things are not always available outside the UK I think). One curious factoid (to use a Bursism :) was that amongst the guitarists the Banshees were considering to replace the one that left was Bruce ! Which of course would never have happened. Bruce would have politely refused. Funny to imagine a 'what if?' scenario - the Banshees going down a more NOISE route... or, angular pop v goth rock: Lock Up Your Bats... Hearing the various examples of McGeoch's work over the course of the programme really brought into sharp relief what an outstanding and innovative guitarist he was... good to see that being acknowledged.. some of those old Magazine classics were really galvanised by his riffs... Shot By Both Sides, The Light Pours Out Of Me, Rhythm of Cruelty, Because You're Frightened, Philadelphia... well, the list goes on... A shame that Magazine's potential success seemed to have been held back by what Devoto himself described as his insular attitude to the press... The obit. says McGeoch 'died in his sleep' - does anyone know anything more specific about this ?
