The Dutch sound engineers are well aware that to stop the sound reverbing around the high ceiling it can't be turned up too high... those at the mixing desks touring with bands can't understand this and keep turning the volume up, and up... with the result that the sound quality is diabolical. Interesting to hear how that show works out. Sadly I will only be in Amsterdam a week or so after this show - let's hope Bart can report back! Nice one... might be just the thing I need in this here bleak winter! Last time I've been at the Paradiso, it was a Franz Ferdinand gig, the sound was amazingly superb! Mind you, this is indeed not usually the case. Fingers crossed. Big Arse. Big Chorus. Wayyyy too subtle for Reagans US was that one! As for Radiohead, well they don't trouble my world really although I rather liked Kid A. I admire their ability to mass-produce, and sell what is essentially angsty, earnest 70s prog-rock. There is a huge billboard for their new LP outside my window right now. I don't particularly want to listen to them but i'm glad they're around and I'm glad they've used their comfortable position in the rock foodchain to give our headless-chickens-on-coke music "industry" a much needed kick up the arse. They are "your older brothers favourite band" for this generation...the Dark Side-era Pink Floyd. But they fill an important role, they are a serious and arty influence in a sea of punky-comedy NME bands with shite names like "Does it Offend You Yeah?", the relentlessly "fun" sound of CSS (this generations Belle Stars) or crack-addled drivel that poshboy Pete Doherty flings around. n.p.
