When I saw Ladytron here in Atlanta last September, they played a cover of Shocking Blue's "Send Me A Postcard" for the encore. Daniel joked that this was an old Ladytron song that they had written in 1970. For those who haven't read it, this is McCarthy's post-holocaust novel, the greatest in that sub-genre IMHO and so perfectly realised that it haunts you after reading like few books read in adulthood do. Nine months on, I still think about it a lot. God knows what the impact of writing it must have been like, returning every day to a land so dead it will never recover in human lifetime. It's one of the great father / son books too. I haven't read Blood Meridian but have it around somewhere and will track it down. Another the Keith - -----Original Message----- From: owner-idealcopy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-idealcopy@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Jason Rogers Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road' is one of the Great Ones. I'm hearing that John Hillcoat (The Proposition) is slated to film an adaptation of 'The Road'. Mixed feelings on a film adaptation, but I honestly can't think of a better person than the director who filmed The Proposition. I have all of the Cormac McCarthy novels at home, along with a couple of his plays, and I hold him in high esteem as my favorite author. 'No Country For Old Men' and 'The Road' are both noticeably more accessible than most of McCarthy's other novels (especially 'Suttree', which took a while with its outlandish vocabulary), but without sacrificing intensity or bite. McCarthy's 'Blood Meridian' stands as the most disturbing novel that I've ever read, but also one of the best that I've ever read. Word around the campfire is that Ridley Scott has been wanting to film this novel for the longest time. I'm hard-pressed to imagine, however, how the violence of 'Blood Meridian' could ever be put into film without having the harshest film rating in history. Off subject...Not sure how my original post ended up as one large grammar-absent paragraph, as I had spaced everything accordingly. This new Windows Live Hotmail thing is irritating sometimes. Anyway, here's five that I've enjoyed hearing in recent months. GRINDERMAN - Grinderman There was feeling in some quarters that this, after the showpiece Get It On, wasn't different enough to the Bad Seeds. Who cares!?! There's some great numbers here that are just getting better and better as time goes on. And Set Me Free, the most Bad Seeds-like track her, is fit to grace any of their albums. SMOKEY ROLLS DOWN THUNDER CANYON - Devendra Banhart Last time I mentioned liking Devendra here I got called a hippy, but who cares!! I'm not normally into bearded singer songwriters singing about wars ending, but this guys last 2-3 albums have been superb. Although this isn't quite so hot, the opening track, Cristobal, for one, is magnificent. I wasn't sure about the Latin American influenced tracks at first, but they're sounding better already. AMAN IMAN - Tinariwen I knew a couple of tracks inc the truly fab Cler Achel from magazine free cd's and Later, and the rest of it hasn't been a disappointment. Loving this. SUZAN GALAXY - The Suzan All girl Japanese band who I saw support The Go Team (and Caribou) recently. 60's pop with the odd bit of New Rose drumming. Charming. DIVIDING OPINIONS - Giardini Di Miro Italian band with shades of MBV. Impressed. http://www.evilsponge.org/albums/GiardiniDiMiro__DividingOpinions.htm Probably not played it for a couple of months now, but my album of the year so far is probably... SPIDER SMILE - Tarwater I like Tarwater a lot. Silur and Animals, Suns & Atoms are two of my favorite albums of the last ten tears. I'm not saying Spider Smile is as good as them, but it's definitely one of the best releases of the year for me. I know there was a feeling in some quarters that it was just another Tarwater album, and admittedly they've not taken any huge leap from their sound with album, but this is proving to be a real grower. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim" To: "Des Berry" ; Sent: Sunday, November 04, 2007 7:29 PM Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Hello from PostEverything > Des Berry wrote: >> Hello everyone >> >> Des here from PostEverything. > >> Anyway, the reason, why I joined the list was to get a feel for what fans >> of >> the band are listening to and buying between Wire releases.
