Great mixture of really old tunes and improvised pieces, featuring Fred Frith on some tracks. (Gig pics on Flickr link at end of this post) Martyn Bates/Max Eastley - Songs of Transformation Finally out on Italian label Musica Maxima Magnetica ten years after Virgin originally were to have released it (but didn't because Simon Hopkins left) Martyn Bates: Mystery Seas Martyn Bates/Migraine Inducers: Dissonance/Antagonistic Music Ruins: Refusal Fossil Re-release on Skin Graft of rare 1995 album plus extras. Hilarious brew of hyperactive prog/metal/math rock. On speed. LITE/funanori - A Tiny Twofer Split EP on Transduction Records: LITE are a very tight Japanese math rock combo. funanori (Japanese for sailor - the cover of the ep, appropriately, has a Raymond Pettibon illustration of Steve McQueen as a sailor) a new collaboration between Kaori from The Go! Team and ex-Minutemen & Stooges bassist Mike Watt. Terrific stuff. Pan sonic: Cathode Phase Joe Colley - Psychic Stress Soundtracks A revelation at our I&E Festival earlier this year (pics in Flickr), this SF based electronics musician has an innate feel for his materials, which he articulates intelligently and beautifully. Reminiscent of parts of Pan sonic without the beats and John Duncan. Only better. Thomas Korber/Graham Halliwell - The Large Glass Thomas Koner - Teimo Richard Chartier/Asmus Teitchens - Fabrication Haswell & Hecker - Blackest Ever Black :zoviet*france: - Collusion Nurse With Wound - Spiral Insana Laika - Wherever I Am, I Am What Is Missing Morton Feldman - Clarinet & String Quartet The Viola In My Life Violin & String Quartet Coptic Light Toru Takemitsu - I Hear The Water Dreaming Quotation Of Dream Olivier Messaien - Visions De L'Amen Early Organ Works Bernard Hermann - Taxi Driver soundtrack So much more than a simple signature sound of a sleazy saxophone solo, Hermann's dark orchestral colourings seethe with rainsoaked streets and noir dread. The Shining soundtrack (Wendy Carlos, Bartok, Penderecki, Ligeti etc) Genuinely unsettling soundtrack to an unhinged film Unknown Pleasures Closer These two albums still really stand the test of time for me - they are both of their time and apart from it. Endlessly satisfying... Corbijn did a fine job on Control I reckon, strong feel for the time and outstanding performances from Sams Riley and Morton. Playing live really worked too. Chairs Missing 154 Fall - Bend Sinister Eyeless In Gaza - Caught In Flux Drumming The Beating Heart Minutemen - The Punchline What Makes A Man Start Fires ? Camberwell Now - The Ghost Trade Can - Tago Mago Iggy Pop - The Idiot "Last night I was down in the lab, talking to Dracula and his crew" A real classic old fave amongst the old faves, this album sounds like it was recorded in a morgue by reanimated cadavers on shots of adrenalin, especially when the chorus goes on Funtime: "All aboard for funtime" - they sound like zombies. The kick drum on Nightclubbing sounds like a greatly amplified heartbeat. The whole album has this incredibly lugubrious, haunted and slightly industrial feel, the keyboard sounds on a song like Mass Production reminds me of the atmospheres in early Suicide, quite Ballardian in it's description of driving ".. along the freeway, see the smokestacks belching.." John Moran - The Manson Family, an opera Iggy's eerie baritone perfect for the part of Vincent Bugliosi. Hit me with some current top 5's! >> good thread Des. i like reading what the other Copyists are listening to, so i'll bite as well. PJK's Top 5 Spins for the past few weeks: - - "The Year Zero" by Nine Inch Nails (this one really grew on me) - - "Trading Twilight for Daylight" by Great Northern - - "Goodbye" by Ulrich Schnauss - - "You're a History in Rust" by Do Make Say Think (as well as the excellent bootleg of their show in Paris a few months back which i downloaded from ... somwhere.) - - "Inventions for the New Season" by Maserati singles on spin include Robbers of High Street, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, The Selmanaires, and The Cinematics. PJK please don't hate me because i can't type..... - --- All the cool kids are doing it: HTTP://www.EvilSponge.org ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2007 12:36:53 -0800 From: "Paul Pietromonaco" Subject: [idealcopy] Top 5...er...*sigh* Hi everyone, Okay - I think my IdealCopy membership is about to be revoked. I looked at my top 5 rotation discs this week, and realized "I'm lame!". ^_^ Prepare yourself for the "Shock and Awe"...*shudder* 1. Ladytron - Witching Hour Not sure how I missed this one when it came out. I have previous Ladytron albums, so I was kind of expecting another Electroclash record, and had held off purchasing for that reason. I sure wasn't expecting "My Bloody Valentine" - I wish I'd seen them on tour for this one. 2. Split Enz - True Colours Yeah yeah - found this CD in my collection and realized I needed to hear it NOW. "Nobody takes me seriously" anyway, right? 3. The Roches - The Roches/Keep On Doing These albums work better as a whole - pick and choose your favorite tracks, and drop the ones you don't like. Both were produced by Robert Fripp, so they sound like they're from the same sessions anyway - even though they're not. They've released a new album - Moonswept - after a long time off, but it's disappointing. I'll probably spin it again in few months. Maybe I'll be able to spin the dissapointing Buffalo Daughter "Euphorica" then too. (I still can't believe that record - who thought letting the turntablist *sing* was a good idea?) 4. Yoko Kanno - Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex O.S.T. 2 Yeah - okay - it's anime theme music - but Yoko Kanno is probably the best composer in Japan right now. She can veer from orchestral scores (Escaflowne) to hard Jazz (Cowboy Bebop) without missing a step. The Ghost In The Shell scores are kind of like Japanese Electronica - but with guest vocalists from around the world. Featured highlights on this disc are "Rise" (Russian) and "I Can't Be Cool" (Italian). 5. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium Probably the most "mainstream" title I'm listening to right now. This is quite the sprawling mess of a record - 2 discs! - but has its moments. Some of the tracks are demo-thin - but the band interplay is still quite good. Honorable mention (if that's the right word) 6. Various Artists - Underworld (soundtrack) Every once in a while you need Vampire soundtracks in your playlist. This one has been peeking in and out of the top 5 like a vampire dodging the sun on a partly cloudy day. Some of the tracks are good - particularly the instrumentals - but there's a lot of filler by no-name artists. Plus - there's a track by Milla Jovovich.....enough said. Cheers, Paul P.S. I had no idea the new Shellac record was out. Ordered it today, along with the new Wire EP. ^_^ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2007 21:15:42 -0000 From: "Mark Short" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Hello from PostEverything Miles Davis - On The Corner Roisin Murphy - Overpowered Led Zep - How The West Was Won Panda Bear - Person Pitch. Not convinced this is the future of pop, despite the glowing reviews. And having been to see Control last week, I'm finally going to get some Joy Division. No, actually that's just me being useless - it is here too; I was just getting my albums confused. Both the records are pretty fabulous, regardless. As far as recent listening habits, I've been slowly burning all my CD's to my computer and so have been taking a serious trip down memory lane! So the most recent "listens" would be: Sigur Ros - Taak The Jam - All Mod Cons Mahavishnu Orchestra - Visions of the Emerald Beyond Malice Mizer - Merveilles Kraftwerk - Die Mensch Machine Husker Du - Warehouse King Crimson - Live in Berkeley, 1982 I'm really liking the new Githead, BTW! I'm part way through the first listen and so far my favorite is "Drop" as I really like all of the guitar textures play on that one! Take care, Rick Tired of spam? Yahoo!
