The 80's are an under-rated decade IMO. Admittedly, most of my fave ever albums came from the 70's (Electric Warrior, Funhouse, Bryter Layter, Marquee Moon, Chairs Missing, etc), but the 80's were certainly responsible for some great records, too. But whilst I've played some of my very favourites such as Kilimanjaro, Fried, Closer fairly regularly over the years, there's some 80's LP's I've rarely heard in years. So this coincidentally enough last week I had set about putting that right and listened to the follwing. SOUL MINING - The The I love Matt Johnson, and there's some of his best work here. Jools Holland might be considered a bit of a knob by many, and I certainly don't share his love of empty big-band bombast, but he deserves his place in Rock History just for that wonderful piano solo on Uncertain Smile. And though I didn't notice it till now, I reckon Kate Bush had been listening the wonderful closing track, Giant, before she made The Hounds Of Love. THE PLATAU PHASE - Crispy Ambulance If the Crispy Ambulance are famous for anything then it's surely for being called Crispy Ambulance, definitely one of my fave band names. The title track has always been a fave, but got to say I really enjoyed Chill this week. I'm a sucker for that drum sound. THE KEY OF DREAMS - Section 25 I probably enjoyed this more than I expected to. In the same way that with hindsight The The seemed an influence on Ms Bush above, I couldn't help thinking that Robert Hamson had been listening to Visitations here before he formed Loop. And I love There Was A Time, the opening track on side two, with its more or less out of tune harmonies that somehow work! I also played the relentless funky JUST FASCINATION - Cabaret Voltaire 12" 45 and PLAY by Magazine, which I didn't get at the time, finally getting it a few tears ago on cd. Definitely a live album that stands up to repeated listenings. Yeah, all this 80's was shite stuff doesn't wash with me. There's good and bad any time.
