["Jack Craddock" Subject: [idealcopy] 80's Smoking ... the 80's, for me a decade where I had to dig very deep for anything of merit There were in fact many joys in the 80's, but that was because I went further and deeper than previously . In many ways I had given up on rock music, at least what was visible on the surface. I was (and am) influenced by Ezra Pound's conviction to MAKE IT NEW, and remember reading in Derek Bailey's IMPROVISATION where he said that one day he realized that in Jazz, one of the highest compliments a young player would receive was that 'you sound just like...', and how hollow and fruitless an aspiration that was. So, when I'm told that such and such a band sounds like a bit of X and a smattering of Y, I realize that everybody has roots and influences, but firstly, X and Y had better be pretty fucking interesting in their own right, and secondly such and such a band had better be so good that either I don't hear the comparisons, or don't care about them. I liked Joy D. and the first ten minutes of New Order, I loved (early) XTC, Gang of Four, PiL, all the NYC No Wave stuff, and despite being glad of their recent exhuming, don't want bands that sound like them. Remember, none of the GREAT punk bands sounded like each other. Lester Young had 'issues' with Ch. Parker's music, Miles didn't 'get' Ornette at first, turntables and computers were not welcomed with open arms into the greater music community. "Say something once, why say it again?" So, IC, now that I think about it, what WAS great in the 80's for you? Here's the beginning of a list, limited to bands/musicians who emerged in the 80's, as opposed to people I only found out about then (like FELA, Grandmaster Flash, Uhuru, Bailey, Zorn, etc.) Birthday Party, Marc Ribot, Big Black, Butthole Surfers,Public Enemy,Pogues, Einsturzende, LiquidLiquid, Minutemen, early SY, ...shit, I'm stuck with white guitar bands, mostly...I'll stop here, hoping others can remind me or turn me on to something I should know about. Re:: smoking: I love to see attractive women smoke, but my personal fetishes are, as in the Burroughs quote, personal. So, for the general society, my take is that...You can do ANYTHING you want to YOURSELF, except when it hurts others, UNLESS in self-defense. (2nd hand smoke may not be as bad as first hand smoke, but it is not as nice as fresh air, or even air-conditioned air. I recall Jerry Seinfeld, joking about coming out of a smoky night club, 'whew, I second-hand smoked two packs last night!' I personally have felt bad after hours in a smoky club, though not always. I don't recall ever feeling bad after hours of watching a band in the night air outside.) But a Nazi I'm not, neither pro or anti-smoking. I just think you should respect other opinions. Thank you, Jon Whitney, for making us aware that it is Colin Newman's birthday; and, in doing so, for bringing us back to the reason this email group exists: all things Wire. And music that fans of Wire can appreciate. IMHO, this newsletter does not exist to debate issues like smoking. I understand it's an important issue, but I think one that is not proper or applicable to this forum. That's just my insignificant and naive opinion. I hope everyone understands that I am proud to be part of this group. Jack C. in Virginia On 9/16/07, Jon Whitney wrote: > > Colin Newman: b: September 16, 1954 > > > > -- > Brainwashed Inc. > P.O.
