That's going to keep me occupied for quite some time. I realise that I've come to rely on this list quite a bit to alert me to new stuff that might be interesting, and it seems to do a really good job so in fact thanks one and all. Whilst I'm here maybe I could mention a couple of my current faves. The Young Knives are a thoroughly odd band - definite elements of early Cure and Gang of Four in there, plus occasional bits of eccentric English whimsy. The lead singer somehow looks exactly wrong to be in a rock group. Someone (maybe on this list) suggested that it's like having David Mitchell (excellent comedian from UK TV series 'Peep Show') as lead singer and that's exactly right. Their 'Voices of Animals and Men' has been excellent company whilst driving lately, and there's 'Terra Firma', the first new track from the next album on their myspace page - well worth a listen: http://www.myspace.com/theyoungknives Then there's Beauty Pill http://www.myspace.com/beautypill - - intelligent rock, but in a good way. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2007 13:20:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Ari Subject: [idealcopy] O.T: Ian B would you.............. .............contact me off list, need your address............ Hi everyone, I pass this along without comment - well, except for the snarky one in the Subject: line. Cheers, Paul From http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20739983/ Led Zeppelin to play reunion gig in London Legendary rock band broke up in 1980; no tour just one show planned REUTERS Updated: 2 hours, 6 minutes ago LONDON - Led Zeppelin will perform a one-time comeback concert in memory of Ahmet Ertegun, a co-founder of Atlantic Records. The band will perform together for the first time in 19 years on Nov. 26, at Londons The O2 venue, on the banks of the River Thames. Promoters said the concert would pay tribute to Ertegun the label boss who popularized Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Led Zeppelin who died in December at age 83. During the Zeppelin years, Ahmet Ertegun was a major foundation of solidarity and accord, Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant said in a statement. For us he was Atlantic Records and remained a close friend and conspirator. Ertegun, who co-founded the Atlantic Records label with Herb Abramson, signed Plants band in 1968 and later snapped up the Rolling Stones. Led Zeppelins remaining original members Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones will headline the concert with late drummer John Bonhams son, Jason, on drums, organizers said Wednesday. The quartet is expected to perform a full set lasting up to two hours. Promoter Harvey Goldsmith said Led Zeppelin would play one show only and there was no commitment or discussion of playing beyond that. The Whos Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman, Foreigner and young Scottish singer Paolo Nutini the last British act Ertegun signed will also play at the tribute concert. All proceeds will go to the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund to establish music scholarships for students at institutions in Britain, the United States and Turkey, Goldsmith said. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2007 22:47:20 +0100 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: [idealcopy] Zep reform Well, thats a bit of a surprise given Plants long-expressed aversion and I was getting quite excited until I checked the price. #125. Admittedly this is a one-off for charedee but still And look at the support acts: Pete Townsend, Foreigner, Paolo Nutini and Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings. Think Ill stay at home and rewatch the Zep DVD. Incidentally, on the subject of support acts, I was listening to the Word magazine podcast earlier today (I realise that admitting this AND expressing an interest in Zeppelin rather tarnish the image but Ill carry on) and they were speculating that the recent English smoking ban is having a detrimental effect on the number of people turning up to support acts, as smokers are preferring to leave their entry into the venue until the last minute so they can have another fag outside. Dont think Ive noticed this myself yet (and I tend to go to gigs with non-smokers) but it has an air of plausibility. I know Andy L was a fan. I saw him at least three times and found him a tremendously engaging performer. A sad loss. Details here (scroll down for English) - http://www.stthomas.no/ After a short while his voice unexpectedly comes in which is a bit disconcerting if you're not expecting it.
