PP looks like a 6-stone re-animated corpse but his singing and playing were absolutely bang-on and the whole thing was , amazingly , superb. i'd never seen them before , and i was pleasantly surprised how "cool" the band were , i always thought they might come over as old pub rock musos but they played with a real swagger and blew everoyne away. obviously they did "another girl" , but no other singles. the set was mainly from "even serpents shine" , all the big heavy album tracks rolled out in fine style. great stuff. support was penetration , pauline murray still can really sing and they were quite fun too. never really a top rate band , but still worth a look and glad i arrived just in time for it all. any sign of that githead UK tour then? ;-) p ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2007 11:14:23 +0100 (BST) From: PAUL RABJOHN Subject: [idealcopy] only ones (cont) well the re-scheduled only ones wolverhampton gig happened on sunday night , must say i thought this tour had carcrash potential and was quite surprised to read keith's rave review of the gig he attended. i really had my doubts , but who was i to doubt the words of mr a. and welll...............having seen the gig i have to say full marks keith as it really was something special. Well, having seen both Battles and Tunng at this year's Green Man Festival (neither for the first time) I have to say that Tunng shaded it for me, although they have nothing in the set to stand up to 'Atlas' - which is the Single of the Year if such a thing exists anymore. But beyond this the rest of the set although interesting to watch (all those guitars tucked high on the chest and that incredible drummer who when he took his shirt off was steaming and running in rivulets of sweat simultaneously) but somewhat unengaging musically. Tunng, meanwhile, stood up for the first time, played some heavy metal guitar, has an Hawaiaan Tiki bar on stage to house their sampling man and unleashed dozens of beach balls into the audience at the end. We were impressed. Another the Keith - -----Original Message----- From: owner-idealcopy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-idealcopy@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Tim I like the Battles and they are a fine live act if not a great recording act, and there drummer is something else esp when he leaps up to hit the stupidly high crash cymbal. The new LP is ok, although the goofiest moment is the best..the single 'Atlas' which is perhaps the only post-rockl/math-rock/Glitterbeat glamstomp meets gabba ravecore I can think of: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IpGp-22t0lU NME calls them 'Puzzle Rock' which is a wonderful idea for a genre. But be warned..they could just be Jazz/prog fusion coming in through the backdoor once bolted so firmly by punk but they do at least have certain "something" that elevates them above the likes of say Tuung...who are just shit. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2007 02:04:30 +0100 From: Tim Subject: Re: [idealcopy] question for brits perhaps - who is this bald dude?
