I think Deerhunter are a fantastic band. Their live show is part Stooges, part Fad Gadget, part Antony and the Johnsons. The album Cryptograms has some great songs but I think there's some rather awkward lulls here and there. It's good but the following EP, Fluorescent Grey, is flawless (very to-the-point with only four songs). I do recommend Cryptograms as there are some songs which are absolutely brilliant but for a more solid release, the EP floats my boat. I've spent a lot of time this year listening to Deerhunter - Cryptograms and think that it's a superb album. If you're partial to the more accessible music on the second half of the album (the second recording session), then I highly recommend Deerhunter's recent EP, Fluorescent Grey EP, which includes four tracks that pair well with that material. Years ago, I used to see Deerhunter's frontman, Bradford Cox, quite a bit at a local used CD store here in north metro Atlanta area where I'd hang out at from time to time before the store went out of business a while back. It's a bit surreal now to see Deerhunter getting so much attention this year because of remembering those early days. I've seen Deerhunter a couple of times in concert here in Atlanta and their shows are always interesting, to say the least. I hear more Spacemen 3 in there than I do MBV. I do like it, not listened to it for a while must dig it out for a few more spins. 2007 shaping up to be a year of interesting, quite good records but not mindblowing records. I'm currently trying to get my head around the new record by Liars. I love the new Liars. Really fun record to blast. Right now that's competing with Kinski for my volume units. Oh yeah, and A Place To Bury Strangers *wink wink* But yeah, there are a lot of very good albums this year but even my favorite albums haven't blown my mind. I've only played it once thus far, but it confused the hell out of me: just when you think you've pinned them down (and "Drum's Not Dead" was a stunning record), they're off on another strange tangent again. Contrary buggers. That's very much a good thing, though, so I'll persevere with it. Hope that they come over to play some shows, 'cause they were in fantastic form at the Field Day festival a couple of weeks ago.... It seems to be the year for being pleasantly confused by things: I saw Battles again in Brighton on Tuesday and I still can't really work them out. Despite that, their album is probably my highlight of the year so far: endlessly enjoyable, even if I don't fully understand why it exists and what it's trying to do.... Cheers, ig. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V10 #172 ********************************
