His recent quote that he'd always said he was more intersted in making history than making money, but in the light of him shockingly being refused treatment on the NHS because it was too expensive, he realised now that making history wouldn't keep him alive, was gut-wrenching. His more recent signings may have been rather curious (Young Offenders!), possibly the whiff of a man who was trying too hard to keep in touch 'wid da kidz', but this was the man who put So It Goes on TV and introduced the world to Joy Division via one of the coolest record labels EVER. And that's far, far more than most of will ever achieve. And didn't he once wear a Borussia Moenchengladbach badge on Granada Reports on the evening of their European final against Liverpool, knowing full well that this appearance was going out into the homes of all those LFC supporters. A moment of almost She's Lost Control-like proportions! ; ) RIP Tony. You were a one-off. (unlike barney "moon in june" sumner) until last year i worked for a swedish company for about 15 years. never once did i meet a swede who admitted any enthusiasm for bergman , most just said they'd seen one film and found it too depressing to bother even sitting thru. bit sad when he's one of the handful of swedish cultural figures known outside the country , i'd have guessed he'd be a real hero in that neck of the woods. p Jason Rogers wrote: I've never set foot anywhere near Manchester, but the effect of Tony Wilson's Factory label bands on the soundtrack to my life cannot be overstated. Don't think I ever wrote here about Art Pop, but I agree with Keith and most C&M fans that it's certainly one of their strongest collaborations. And, of course, I would like to congratulate Keith for his wedding. giluz Here goes: Dear Githead Fan, Welcome to the latest edition of our occasional small but perfectly formed newsletter. We have a few little developments to share, but firstly we'd like to welcome all those who are new here. In spite of the entirely occasional and somewhat random nature of this communication this list continues to grow so I guess Githead are dong something right! Art Pop latest. The critical response to Githead's latest album continues to exceed all expectation, we have tried to keep the press page at up to date with links to what is at least online but there is also a ton of paper press we unfortunately can't share with you due to copyright reasons. Suffice to say that if you've bought the album and enjoyed it you are in some very good company! Perhaps one of the strangest things that has drifted our way has been the music recommenders site which is a place where inspiration hungry music fans can get direct recommendations by cool indie shops or celebrity endorsers like David Bowie or Hot Chip. The site is sponsored by Nokia so has an ulterior motive but as the Finnish mobile company aren't in the business of selling music and are buying in to a bit of cool here, the recommenders can recommend exactly what they want to. "Drop" from "Art Pop" got recommended by a shop called Phantasio in Amsterdam. You can find out more by following the link on the press page. Digital availability. After a rather protracted period of R&D posteverything has quietly launched it's digital service in the last few days. Githead releases may be found by going to . The site has a lot of new features, most notably the radio (tip, log in to hear full length clips) and of course plenty of releases by projects associated with Githead (including ones that are long out of "physical" print) are now available in digital format. Having a "tame" digital platform opens up the possibility of interesting and alternate releases in-between albums, we are still getting our heads around this one but it'll be worth keeping an eye open for what's coming down the line in the inevitable couple of years before the next album is ready. Video. In the past couple of weeks we've added a video for "Drive By" to the downloads page at . This is the 2nd video we've created for tracks from the album (there's also one for "Drop" there) and is quite special in the way it has been made. The entire content of the video has either been shot on stills cameras or mobile phones. Even the "video" portions have been shot in video mode on digital cameras. Not only that but with Robin in Vienna, Max in Amsterdam & Frankie (our live sound guy) in Rotterdam material was submitted via and added to the pile of material we had from London, Madrid, Brighton & Paris. A truly pan European venture! Video is something we take seriously and we intend to make more videos for tracks from "Art Pop" and more live videos as opportunity presents itself. They tend to get uploaded to sites like MySpace & YouTube but the highest quality will always be available through githead.com. And who knows, maybe we'll compile them all to some kind of video release at some stage! Live Firstly thanks to all those that came to see us on our last little foray. It's always good to see you! We had a great time even if we got flooded in Paris! Some of the photographic documentary is a bit thin so of you did take photos and haven't contacted us yet please don't hesitate to! We now have a new live agent so hopefully shows will be a little less sporadic. Certainly one thing currently under consideration is a UK tour this year. We will of course keep you informed of all developments. XXL T-Shirt 2nd guessing merchandising is a risky game and we can't say we managed to get get it right from the size/qty point of view. A case in point being the XXL t-shirts we did for the "Art Pop" special offer. We made up a small qty in this size thinking they'd come in handy but probably mainly stay on the shelf while the other sizes went. How wrong could we have been! All the XXL shirts went within days of them becoming available, the net result being they quickly went out of stock. However, one XXL t-shirt turned up which had been mis-filed at posteverything HQ it's a red & yellow "Art Git" (product code GITTS2XXL) and we will make it available TODAY on a first come first served basis. When it's gone, it's gone. It can either be bought as a single item (for #15.00) or in combination with the album (for #20.00). Other sizes are of course still available. These include a new Art Pop desktop/ wallpaper, the video to Drop and a "re-imagining" of Githead performing To Have & To Hold at the QEH in March 2005. Enjoy! {GH]MAY 12, 2007: "ART POP" NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH LAST FM'S STREAMING RADIO Art Pop is now available to be streamed in Last FM's streaming player. For those that don't know it, Last FM is is site which tracks an individual's digital music plays (computer or mp3 player) building up a profile of their personal taste. A "radio station" then becomes available based on the taste of those who's taste is similar to your own. The quality is more "radio" than "hi fi" but it can be a good way to discover new music. Art Pop has its own page as does the Last FM Githead group . See you next time. I dare say if there is a favorite in my heart by our beloved group, this must be it. What does change from time to time is my favorite tune. At the moment, I am in love all over again with "Indirect Enquiries". In the past, it's been the poppier tunes like "The 15th" or "Blessed State". No clue why I'm posting this apart from just wanting to gush for a moment. Jack Jack L. They now call Wilson "Mr Manchester", The Flag on Manchester town hall is flying at half mast (which isn't done lightly here) and people have been leaving flowers outside the site of the Hacienda. Not bad for a minor TV celeb and Record label boss. Will anyone really give fuck when Seymour Stein dies? (Wilson probably would have actually) His quality control veered off the cliff many times..Adventure Babies were a poor mans Deacon Blue if you can imagine such a thing, and lately he was championing the awful Enter Shikari who to anyone over 12 just sound as flat and uninspiring as Jesus Jones at 200bpm. He was not a great businessman and I'm sure if you are a member of the Factory 3rd division like Section 25 you'll have some financial gripes but ultimately we should admire the pedantic bastard for sticking to his guns and his enthusiasm for whatever cause..lost and otherwise. Apparently he claimed he was only ever proved wrong twice in his life, presumably one was not signing the Smiths. Not sure what the other one was. His legacy lives on though. Out of my window I can see Tony's mate, Tom Bloxham of Urban Splash, re-imagining three redundant 70s council tower blocks and turning them into something quite strange and beautiful and starting to transform a really deprived area. Just up the road is a vibrant, cultural quarter that has sprung up around the Dry Bar. As for Happy Mondays, they have done to their career what the Beach Boys did to theirs after Pet Sounds and turned into a cartoon, cabaret version of themselves which casts a long shadow over their best work. Such as Bummed, which is one my favorite LPs of all time and for my money is the best work Martin Hannett ever did. The likes of Kasabian have had a dry wank attempt at emulating it but nobody has yet come close to the ferociously loud swagger of that stuff. No one covers it so what?!(Manic Street Preachers had a stab at Wrote For Luck once but apparently couldn't figure out guitar part...which is a secret, like the recipe for Vimto, locked forever in the brain of Mark Day). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2007 19:56:19 -0500 From: "David McKenzie" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] 154 Its Beginning To And Back Again ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V10 #164 ********************************
