He was a very important and influential figure to music throughout the 1980s. Joy Div, Cabaret Voltaire, ACR, New Order, Section 25, Durutti Column, ESG, and numerous others still have lasting influence on music today. The artwork and aesthetic of everything has a lasting influence on music entrepreneurs who don't want their record labels to look like corporate trash. He presented stuff that was always at least worth a listen and for a long time had a visual quality which was both very appealing and tasteful. He didn't pimp pretty boys posing with tons of makeup and hair spray, he wasn't trying to sell to the masses, he stuck to what he thought was really good music. He was a visionary for a number of years. I have nothing but respect for the man, himself, but although Happy Mondays were quite popular in the UK, don't have nearly the caliber of influence or visual aesthetic Factory incorporated in the late 70s and throughout the 80s. How many Joy Division cover tunes are recorded each year versus Happy Mondays cover tunes? I am sad at his death and angry at the health care system in these apparent "first world" countries but as much as I hate to say this (and once again, I mean no disrespect to the man) I think the world really lost the truly visionary Tony Wilson in the late 1980s. His influence in such a short period of time (late 70s through the mid 80s) is far more than most everybody else in their entire lifetime, I just wish it could have continued.
