It was very interesting, to say the least. You can get a sense of it here: http://digicharat.weasel-bot.com/~paulp/police/ (3gp is my cell phone standard - you'll need QuickTime or RealPlayer to look at the clips.) Musically, the Police are playing much in the style of their "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86" single. You can get a sense of that from the clips - the tempos are slower, and the arrangements are more "jazz" than "punk" or "reggae". Technically, the show was an amazing disaster. The Police are obviously a little rusty - especially on this material. The first few songs had lots of little mistakes - timing, tuning, missed choruses, etc. However - each musician is so amazing that the recovery was almost seamless on each mistake. Sometimes the only way to tell was the facial expressions. By the halfway point of the show, though, it had become something else entirely. The mistakes had stopped, and the inividual skill of each musician had fused into a unified whole more than the sum of its parts. This is the oddest reunion tour - it really does seem that they decided on the spur of the moment to do this tour. This isn't a well-oiled touring machine regurgitating the hits - it's almost like they're three talented musicians trying to learn the songs of the Police. Like they're a cover band covering themselves - almost Wire-esque in a way. A word about Sting. He's actually behaving himself for the most part. You don't get the sense that he's treating Stewart and Andy like sidemen. Yes - he's calling a few of the shots - but from the perspective of the vocalist/bassist, not "Sting the Rock God". They all did seem to be having a good time - which is a good thing. And - Sting's voice is in great shape. They may have changed the keys of a few songs to avoid some of the high notes, but he sounds great. This isn't a show for everyone - the tickets are a little expensive - and if you're not a big Police fan, you probably won't enjoy it. But - my wife and I had a great time. (So much for my indie cred!) Cheers, Paul P.S. By the way - that's a photo of my wife and I. However - the camera reverses it when you take it with the lid closed. So - we're actually the mirror image of that photo. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V10 #111 ********************************
